I have a 2001 Ford Ranger XL Supercab 4.0 4x4 - automatic
200000+ miles
It seems to run and drive flawless odd issue is that it will never go above 4k rpm its like thats its rev limit. Is 4k the rev limit while going down the road?
Also feels like the gas pedal is very shallow as if it can only be depressed 3/4 of the way.
If i put it in low gear it still will not rev past 4k perhaps something is wrong with the transmission shift computer???
Remove the tube from the throttle body and watch the throttle plate when someone floors the throttle. If it does'nt open all the way theres your problem
Nice job doing the search, and you're right if the fuel filter is clogged it will cause the problem you are having, but since the "gas pedal can only be depressed 3/4 of the way" i would still take a quick look at the throttle body.

Turns out there was a mouse nest under the dash near the pedal causing the issue. The truck will now easily melt the 32's that are on it, it is like night and day.
