weak 5.8L engine

i have a 1995 f250 4WD. i had a strong headwind coming home today. i got up to highway speed and engaged the cruise control but my truck kept downshifting out of OD to regain speed and then it would shift back. it kept shifting back and forth until i turned off OD, any idea what might be going on? i do have a tall old aluminum cap which is very un-aerodynamic but i should have plenty of power to muscle through some wind, shouldn't i? Thanks.

taking into account the headwind and bad aerodynamics, to me it sounds like the overdrive is just doing its job. anytime the overdrive starts to hunt back and forth, you should just switch it off.

I agree.

You didn't mention wind speed for the headwind, but when I bring it up, headwind is more than 10 and if you're driving right into it with a "Brick", then yeah, leave the OD off.
