Ball Joints at 32K???

Well for the last while my steering wheel has been shaking when I reach about 55-60mph. The left front tire looked really bad like some of the lugs right in the middle were down and some were up. So I took it to the tire shop and had the spare mounted on that wheel. It did not help at all. So off to the dealer I went. They called me later and said it was the other tire and I needed to put on 2 new front tires. Of course I said go ahead. Later they called back and said the shaking had improved but did not go away, so one of my ball joints was bad. Now it is there overnight for a ball joint. $100 deductible because my 36 months was up last month. Does this sound legit????

Anything is possible but I think I would want to inspect the ball joint that they remove. I know it's too late but I would like to see the play in it just to verify. Sure is low miles though, mine have 146,000 on them and as far as I know they're fine.

I agree about the mileage. But I guess anything is possible. They lasted over 100K on my other dually. We will see. I"m really disappointed about how long the tires held up also. I'm putting Michellin on the front.

I agree that you should inspect the joint when their done. I'm not at all an expert but I had dealt with bad shake in the steering wheel had new tires out on had them aligned and still didn't resolve it so decided to change out the factory steering damper with a bilstein one and haven't had a problem since. Just tidbit in case you get your truck back and it's still shaking

I recently was talked into buying a set of michelin ats tires by the dealer, and had problems with them. I originally had the bf's and wanted to find a better tire. After I had the michelins put on the truck rode rough as hell and the rear end would hop when you hit a bump. They seem to be made out a heavier rubber compound, and a heavier sidewall. They were so bad I had to bring them back and went back with the bf's. Maybe if I had to pull a very heavy trailer or drive in the snow they would be ok, but I could not get them balanced after bringing it back 3 times.

So I picked it up this afternoon and it is completely fixed. It drives like new, like a dream. So when the service writer called me and said ball joint, he was not referring to ball joints that we are familiar with. I put the receipt back in the truck already but I think it was the track bar. I crawled under it before I paid and it has new bushings and a new "knuckle" on the other end. The parts were only about $105, but they got them for 4 hrs labor. My warranty picked up the tab less my $100 deductible. As far as the tires go, the BFGs on the front were toast. I have new Michellins on it now and I have had really good luck with them. I ran them on the previous dually and I have them on my 5th wheel. They are an updated version on the LTX MS2 I guess and they ride and feel really good, way better than the BFGs. So now I wonder if the track bar caused the premature tire wear, or if I just had some bad tires. Either way, for once I'm satisfied with the dealer on the first try.

Yea, I hear you. Glad your truck is back to riding right but so many variables makes it hard to learn/diagnose the one thing that made the difference. I think I'll go twist and shake my track bar just to be sure

What it took

This is what they replaced. After some research it makes sense to me. There a lot of aftermarket trak bars out there that claim to cure the death wobble.

I won't be surprised if all my running around in 4WD causes that same part to fail...

Glad you got it fixed and for $100, that isn't too shabby.

I don't remember seeing anybody else with this failure. I just hope I'm not doing it every 32k miles.

I hope that it isn't a 32K mile maintenance item for you either.
