I've been researching the issue here on FTE, and this past weekend replaced the IAC Valve. I also cleaned the MAF.
Symptoms are random stalling. Before today, it was only at idle. Today it did while under power. It stalled three times before I had it towed home.
It starts up fine, but after stalling it did seem like it wasn't getting fuel when I cranked it a few times. But, then it was good. It still starts fine, and idles fine.
When a pump goes on one of these, do they act up first, or they simply stop working?
This issue has taken place over the past several months, but seems to have come to a head today.
Last resort is changing out the filter before I take it in.

Could be either.
Connect a test lamp to the fuel pump power circuit at the inertia switch and put it where you can see the light while driving. That way, you will be able to see if the engine is stalling while the pump is supplied with power or if the engine is stalling because power to the pump was lost. Be aware that the timing is critical, you have to be able to tell which event happens first.
These fuel pumps die one of two way, random periods of low or no pressure followed by normal operation or sudden and total death like mine suffered.
Replacing the pump (Motorcraft is the one to get ) is a fairly simple job, especially if you can run or pump most of the gas out of the tank first. There is a photo write up or two around here to guide you through the job.

Thanks for your response. I understand your detailed instructions, and appreciate your input.

Okay thanks. Yes, I've already reviewed the detailed DIY (along with several others).
Same symptoms I had.... Ended up being the fuel pump relay on the circuit board which is located on the back side of the fuse block. I had thought fuel pump also; glad my mechanic investigated further.
I just replaced a pump on an explorer last week. Symptoms were 1 random no start followed by lack of power every drive after that. Pump was down 20psi from spec. A fuel pressure test on most modern Ford's are easy. Just go buy a gauge at harbor freight, find the port, start truck and read gauge.
My own personal explorer fuel pump just gave up the ghost one day and never worked again.
Get a pressure gauge from Autozone and see what your pressure is at the rail and compare it to Ford specs. Fuel filter is quick and easy to do also. I'm overkill on mine and change it once a year. It's cheap and with the amount of gas that flows through it, why not right?
If you do the pump yourself, make sure you order the right one as there is one for Cali-spec rigs and one for the rest of the country. My TX rig needed a Cali pump.

Any ideas?
Did you every figure out your issue? I am having the exact problems with my 03 Excursion V10

Your 2003 has a fuel rail test port where you can hook up a pressure gauge - Harbor Freight 62623, under $20 with coupon.
Check the power at the Inertia Switch (PK/BK).
The Fuel Pump Relay contacts may be corroded and the Inertia Switch is between the relay and the pump.
Has the fuel filter ever been changed?
