No, the curve won't still be good. It may have been unhooked for a reason though, most likely the vacuum diaphragm leaks or, the previous owner didn't understand how to adjust it. correctly. The vacuum cans are replaceable.
You'll need a timing light, and probably damper tape marking it out to 40°. Set the distributor timing wherever it needs to be to get around 36° total timing on the damper when the RPM is runup (vacuum advance disconnected and plugged) make sure it's done all the way advancing. Hopefully around 3000 RPM. Then reconnect the vacuum advance. Most of the aftermarket cans are adjustable, usually with a small allen wrench.
