Well, a few months back, I had posted that I picked up a 302 and C6 for my rebuild plan.
Well, after tearing down the 302 and taking it in to a shop for them to tank it and tell me what I had, and if it was worth working with, I found out these few things.
Heads had never had hardened seats put in them....work total on heads estimated at $750.
Cylinders were already bored to .030, and would need to be bored to .060 because of scoring.
Crank was badly scored and would need to be replaced.
All in all, total to decently rebuild that engine would have been $2200+.....so I ditched that plan.
Moved on to the C6, which turned out to actually be a C4.
Was a very small investment, engine and trans cost me $70, so now I have some real inexpensive boat anchors or door stops.
Moving on to my most recent acquisition, I came across a pretty complete 5.0 from a 1998 Explorer.
Seems to be quite clean. Still removing all the fuel injection and electronic gear from it before I put it on the stand. I plan on pulling the timing cover as I can see it has a broken water pump bolt/stud, so I will clean that up, and check the timing chain and gears, as well as replace the front seal.
I will also be pulling the pan, replacing the rear main and oil pan gasket, as well as changing the valve covers, and gaskets, and replacing the water pump, t-stat and related gaskets.
I will be replacing the fuel injection and intakes with an old fashioned 4bbl intake and a Holley 650 carb.
I will also be dropping in a new dizzy and an electric fuel pump.
When I got this engine, it had all the serpentine system still on it, including the alt, P/S pump and A/C compressor, which I think will be a nice upgrade.
After I decipher the C4, and find out about rebuilding either it, or the C6 that is in my truck, and complete the overhaul on both, it will give me the chance to clean up the engine bay and spray it, as well as clean up that part of the frame and spray that as well, and install my new brake booster and m/c, as well as have a lot more room to make and run new lines as needed.
About a week ago, I saw an ad on C/L, looking for someone to haul away an old pickup bed. I glanced at the picture of it, and low and behold, it was off of a bump, and had the side toolbox on it.
So, I went to look at it, the bed was in horrible shape...so much rust I am not sure what was holding it together, but I did salvage the tool box and enough of the side panel to have a good strong amount to cut and weld into my bed...yay for me.
Well, that is probably enough for now, I will see if I can upload any of the pictures I have so far...always need pics.
I see the 4 hump GT40P heads. 4 humps and spark plugs straight out like a SBC are the give away. Good heads. And the GT40 intake manifold maybe you can C/L. But I don't know how many Fox Chassis Mustang guys are out there still looking for one now a days.
Keep in mind that the cam uses a different gear material than a flat tappet cam.
Maybe you can swap the gear from the unit that is in place of the distributor and install it on the new distributor. Cast iron and steel gears do not mix well.
Yepper. For future googlers out there, 1985 specific Mustang 5.0L H.O. M/T Dizzy is the way to go. Steel gear to mesh with the steel roller cam in a factory 302 roller motor. And still has EEC components like off a Dentside.
Well, a little more progress....getting parts ordered and brackets, pulleys and such cleaned up. Pulled the oil pan, I have seen much worse engines....
Sorry, they seem a bit blurry, I will try to get better pics.
Also, almost had a minor disaster, I dropped and almost stepped on and crushed the 710 cap.......
Too bad you don't have the 4R70W 4-spd automatic overdrive transmission out of the '98 Explorer you got the engine from. That would be an excellent transmission for this swap --assuming the Explorer was 2WD and not 4WD.
I agree Steve..but, the reason this engine was available to me is because the trans grenaded, and the lady that owned the Explorer felt it was not worth the money to repair/replace it, so she just signed it over to the shop as payment for her bill, and they parted it out. With everything that was still on the engine....A/C comp, Alt, P/S pump, whole serpentine system, complete FI system, wiring loom etc...she must have had a small bill, for me to get that whole setup for only $300.
