[/SIZE]Well I ordered a set of hood springs for my 53. When I got then two different sizes, one was wound tighter than the other. Same part number. I guess they would work but I thought the hood would open & close cockeyed. So I'm waiting for a replacement matched pair. I was wondering how to get the springs off & on. Thumbing threw one of the catalogs I came upon a spring installation tool with instructions. Has anyone ever used this Tool ? Just looking for info.
You can install the spring without the tool, but it makes it SO much easier.
I made mine from thin-walled conduit pipe. I don't remember the diameter. I cut the notch and then drilled holes so I could slide in a big screwdriver for leverage.
If you don't have a piece of conduit that big lying around, the tool isn't very expensive. Less than $15, I think.
When you install the springs, take a good photo of each side hinge. Clean up and paint as desired, clamp the hinge to a work bench securely. Then remove a spring and position the arms correctly and install the new spring. Don't expect your new springs to work perfectly the first time. Adjusting the hinges where they attach to the cowl is not an exact science. That is why the holes in the cowl are so large, so there is plenty of adjustment.
