Hood Spring Replacement

I bought new springs for the hood on my 56 F-100. I have the hinges removed from the cab and am attempting to replace the old springs. The tool I got from Mid-Fifty is suppose to make it easier, but it is too large for the spring by at least an inch. Putting the hinge in a vise and using hand tools, I removed one spring from the hinge. Any advice on installing the new spring would be appreciated. The prior advice I got on removing the windshield trim strip was exactly what I needed to do the job.

I just place mine in the hinges and used a pair of pliers to move it into position the rest of the way.
