Black stone labs

Hey guys, I sent in an oil sample a few weeks ago. How long did it take to get your results?

So what information can you glean from these reports, and should I be doing them?

They check for different metals and antifreeze and stuff. There is something called TBN that I'm not sure what it is or indicates. They post a lot of those reports on cumminsforum if you want to see some.

Is this something I should be doing? And if so, what frequency should I be doing it?

Oil samples are something that can be used to catch problems before they turn into really expensive problems.

Oil samples can find if you have a leaking intake gasket allowing coolant into your oil. They can find fuel. They can find excessive metals and depending on the type of metal they can give you an idea if it's coming from bearings or rings or what. They can tell you if you're changing your oil too often or not often enough. They can tell you if you have a leak in your air filtration system.

Oil samples are most effective if you have an established history with your vehicle. If you have a crazy reading sometimes it can just be an anomaly so it's a lot better if you have a trend and don't make any rash decisions unless you've got two samples in a row showing a problem.

To have a trend established and be able to depend upon oil samples you should probably sample every time you change the oil.

the army sends oil samples with every truck and we rarely changed engine oil we changed the oil filters alot and would top off oil but unless the sample came back stating that the oil needed to be changed it wouldnt happen.
if the master sergeant got the report that metals were found and high volume of metals he would dead line the truck and order a new engine for it

Yeah, but normal people can't afford to just order new engines.
