Oil %

Alright guys im a little worried heres my tale.......i am getting the truck ready to drive to Barrett Jackson in Vegas this last week. I pull the dip stick (4200 miles on the odometer) the level is full......But the oil is frickin black as coal its so black it actually scared the crap out of me.....so i text the service manger and tell him what i see, and asked him to ask his diesel tech if this normal.........he answered back in about 10 minutes and said the tech said thats ok im good to go. I breathe a sigh of relief and head south. I just cant get the color out of my mind. I have done some hauling and this was the first unloaded road trip.....im thinking that around 5k it should tell me my oil needs changed.......noooooooo its at 5200 and still no oil change needed light.......is there away to tell where your at with the % left???????? this is the "breakin" oil if there is such a thing, i dont think there has been a definite answer one way or another on this forum.

The 6.7 will turn new oil Black in about three blocks, nothing to worry about. I changed my first at 5 k and then at 10 k the IOLM hit for the third around 17.5 k.

As far as telling the % left on the 6.7 you could get forscan light and an odb link to read the pids on your phone

What is the best adapter to purchase for the OBD port to make forscan light work with an iPhone?

I agree. Oil turns black instantly in all my previous diesel trucks.

Did some reading as I am bored and did not know the answer fully.

The oil is black because it is actually cleaning while lubricating the engine. The exhaust is exposed to the oil during normal combustion and the soot is picked up. The filter helps keep anything flushed out by this process out of the engine like a kidney.

Additionally a full quart can remain in the engine after drained thus your never fully cleaned out.

It was said that newer higher pressure systems flush more contaminants into the oil then before.

There is a significant difference between a oil burner and a gasser when it comes to the look of oil after just a few miles on a brand new engine...50 miles even. The diesel oil will and should turn black. The gasser will still have a nice golden tint to it. That difference comes down to the fuel being burned and all the soot associated with diesel fuel. It will not harm your engine. Don't be alarmed by the look of the oil.

If you are concerned then send a sample to Blackstone Labs and have them analyze the oil. My guess is it will come back completely safe to run for many more miles.

My last oil change, while I had the oil filter and drain plug removed I poured 2 additional quarts of brand new oil through the oil fill tube and THAT oil came out mostly black. I was just trying to flush out a few more contaminants from the break in process.

Don't be alarmed by the black oil...that is what happens with oil burners.

Oil life monitor, depending on the work the truck is doing, idle times, ect, is up to 10,000 miles per oil change. Many are doing 5000 miles (8000 Km) for heavy service. I can verify oil is black after a 5 minute drive after an oil change. Its the EGR, the DPF, and the Urea systems.

Kiwi3 is what I use for the lite/app version. Note: Does not work with the full desktop version.
