I've been working on my 76 F150 the past few days and I have a weird question about my vac advance. Yesterday I replaced my magnetic pickup. Popped the cap and noticed what I thought were metal shavings stuck all over the pickup and armature. I figured the dizzy gear was getting shredded until I noticed the "shavings" were actually tiny bbs. Pulled the vac advance so I could get the pickup out and when I went to set it on the inner fender a bunch of those bbs poured out. Thats when I noticed that the canister is actually filled with about a 1/4lb of these things and sounds like a tape dispenser when I shake it. Tested the part and it still holds vacuum and only leaks these beads from the distributor side of the canister. So my question for you guys is what is going on here and have you heard of this? Linked some pictures and the only markings on the part are "RP 3" on the orange plug, "1" right above the left screw hole, "4" on cast part of canister, and motorcraft along the side. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Don't touch those!!! They are Chinese Beetle eggs!! Don't let them contaminateyour truck!! I have no idea what they are, never seen that before...someone will chime in who has.
Back in the '80s when VW Rabbits were sold, they used a vacuum reservoir under the hood whose sides looked like a bunch of 3" ***** side by side. When customers asked what THAT is, the most common response was that they were Volkswagen eggs, and that eventually they would hatch into new little Rabbits. Or hold prizes, or whatever.
haha I can't say I've laughed that hard over an internet comment before. I work at a parts store, so I deliver to all the local commercial accounts. Well, last week I figured I'd ask a couple of them if they'd heard of such a thing. Got called an idiot a few times so I brought it along with me for the next run. A few apologies later, I'm still without an answer and can't seem to google it either. Appreciate the laughs and thanks for trying. On the bright side at least you guys can say youre just as knowledgeable as the old school mechanic who works on Lambo's and model T's alike.
Trying to think----it hurts....Did you plug (orange) the retard side of the vacuum adv. ? Those particles don't look completely round like they were "chewed" off something. If that retard part of the adv was hooked to constant vacuum it might have drawn those particles from the distributor. Dist bushing/housing would have to be pretty worn to allow particles to be sucked into the adv. Are all the particles magnetic? Advance weights ok? Pick-up look ok?
Just some random thoughts, never have seen anything like it before.
Kinda looks like stop-leak! I'm with GLR. Those little pieces look like they were 'machined' that way, randomly, by something like the inside of a distributor.
Sounds like they were in the distributor side of the vacuum advance, and not in the vacuum port side? It could be pieces of your old pick-up.
