Hey Guys,
I just posted a thread about my carb problems and I figured I'd open another thread about my distributor. My distributor has what appears to be 2 vacuum ports on it. I'm not 100% sure which is the vacuum advance and what the other one is?
I'm kinda sure the first vacuum port on the front of the bell looking thing out from the distributor is the vacuum advance port but there is another one that sits pointing towards the hood (when closed). What is this for? I have a vacuum guage/pump but haven't hooked it up yet to see if by pulling vacuum if it changes anything.
Why would there be 2 vacuum ports on a distributor?
The second port on the dist. is a retard port. i.e. when you let off the throttle it actually retards the timing in the same way that the advance port will advance timing as the throttle opens or load increases. It was an early way to deal with emissions restrictions.

Is it necessary to run with it? Could I just plug it or will I need to have it? I am having issues with a stalling problem coming back to idle from a WOT in my other thread on my carb issues. Thanks for the info.
I don't believe it's necessary. You could eliminate the problem all together by using a 70-71 dist with a single vacuum advance.
Sounds like your stalling problem is more likely carb related.

Yeah, sounds like my carb and the rebuild I did on it is crap. Thanks for the recommendation for the different distributor. Anytime I can cut out a possible vacuum leak the better.
