my 2014 with 98,000 miles on it started doing this at the pump after filling a few months ago. yesterday it decide it was not going to start unless i opened the throttle plate.
i am going to try cleaning the throttle body today to see if the throttle plate is gunked up.
@farwhitenorth
did you ever find anything out with this issue?
cleaning the throttle body and IAC has not fixed the issue on my 2014.
it did it again today. only way to get it to start is to step on the throttle. once running it runs perfectly.
i have a 2019 ford f250 6.2 gas engine. when you turn the key to start it it will crank excessively until it times out or starts. this started just randomly doing it around 19500 miles. now it does it about every other time you start the truck. i have noticed if you turn the key off when it does this then turn it back on but do not crank it, wait a few seconds then turn it off and then crank it it will fire right up just like it is supposed to. sometimes the engine barely even cranks over 3 times and is running perfect other times it will crank and crank and if it starts it stumbles like its out of gas then evens out. i always buy ethanol free gas as much as possible. i have had it at the deal 3 times now and they say they can get it to do what i am saying but they can not figure out what it is. sounds to me like the fuel pump is not coming on or the valve that dumps the fuel pressure is sticking open.? any ideas because the ford dealers dont have a clue. Want to add to this post the engine always starts perfect the motor barely turns over and is running in the morning after setting all night. I bought the truck late fall and never had the issue until the summer heat came in.
found 2 post from ford engineering tech.
1) the location of the evaporator canister hose located by the fuel fill is allowing it to suck dirt in and plug up the evaporators canister filter and then it pulls that dirt in to the check valve of the fuel pump and allows it to hang open and bleed the fuel psi off.
2) bad check valve springs in the fuel pump it’s self get weak when warm and allows the psi to bleed off. So when the pump kicks on to build psi when you turn the key on it will bypass until the cool gas going over it allows it to reseat causing long cranks with no start.
test: put fuel psi gauge on after engine has been warmed up and gauge should hold 55-62 psi after engine is shut off and key off. If it bleeds down below 55psi the check valve spring in the fuel pump is bad. Need to replace the fuel pump.
funny thing is Ford is aware they have put bad fuel pumps in these bigger trucks and they are keeping quite about all that. There is a tech bulletin about both these issues but the weak spring is the problem. The canister filter was a first guess stab and they have stated that if the under side of the truck was excessively coated in dirt like the truck had been off road that the canister issue would not be covered under warranty. Make sure if you take it to the dealer the under side is cleaned up.
hope this helps you guys because it blew the minds of the techs at the only ford dealer around me for 90 miles. Those cats haven’t got a clue. Not sure they know how to put air in tires. Probably why I never let them touch my truck.
Sure sounds like a fuel problem, the easiest way to check it is with a fuel pressure gauge to make sure the pressure is coming up when the key is turned on before you hit the starter.
i have exactly the same problem 24912 miles 2019 f250 sd xlt 4x4, my dealer here in woodland hills ca hav'nt a clue .i even recorded the starting and brought to them on second visit for oil change service, they still came up with a cockamammy story of rodent eating wires. but how can a motor run if a wire is chewed broken from in middle of run ? still starts after 2 cranks sometime upon cranking fires up immediateily? go figure ford , but love the truck !! this is reply to jeff m. problem

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth.. I had a similar issue last summer with my 6.2. My battery had tested good but it was going on 5 years old. I bought a new battery and poof, problem solved. These engines and electronics need an exact amount of volts and amps, if it gets low weird stuff happens. Since the new battery zero issues. Hope this helps,
i have same problem and your answer is the most logical yet but if the fuel pump is in the tank and check valve is in the pump how would there be warm fuel? Is there something on the motor thats getting hot and causing it to bleed down?
i can't believe i never reported what my problem was!!
my issue was a bad purge valve.
I replaced my purge valve and still have the issue. Truck starts every time, just sometimes cranks for 1/2 second, sometimes 5 seconds. If it takes a while to fire, then it also runs rough for a 1-2 seconds and then smooths out. Sometimes occurs at the pump (short time) and sometimes when it hasn't been started for 8 hours or even a week. But it has also sat for a few weeks and started right up too. Haven't found a common root cause yet. No other issues.
2017 F250 SD 6.2 Flex Fuel
with my bad purge valve it would not start at all. unless you floored the throttle and then held it about half throttle to clear the system. exactly like a carb engine that was flooded.
I am changing my starter after this video. He also tells you where to check wiring for starting issues. Worth watching both vids. This guy is one of the best techs on YT.
