"Auto worker" = someone on the assembly line putting cars together. $30 is high for some of those folks, not enough for others. But afaik, the UAW makes sure the high achievers get kneecapped and the nappers are protected. (see robotics for the future of this job)
Shop rates of $90+ are for repair shops and dealers. At the Lexus dealer, they treat the customer like a king, and charge like he's a king as well. The mechanics do not get the full $90+.
Two different animals.
I don't know any assemby line workers, but our lawn guy charges $15 per hour, so I would think $30 per hour for a skilled position would not be enough.
Some auto workers are skilled, but I bet your lawn guy could step in with a 15 minute lesson and be up to speed on most jobs pretty quick. (based on my highly biased opinion having known former "auto workers" 35 years ago. They were moving to CA as they could make more on welfare here than the jobs available to them in MI)
The key is to stay busy. I make a decent wage with benefits in my job, but the hourly wage doesn't mean much when I am not working. That having been said, I can't afford to buy a house in the SF Bay Area where I work. With fixer uppers going for close to a million, the area that I grew up in is out of my reach.

Telluride, CO is a classic story, it was a sleepy blue collar mining town. Then it became a ski resort area, and the very wealthy moved in. Nothing wrong with that I guess, though property values skyrocketed, taxes increased to nosebleed levels, and all the locals had to move away. I expect we'll see that sort of dynamic at some point on the national scale, not simply in the playground areas of the rich and famous. Wages haven't increased since the 1970s, adjusted for inflation. There's a ****-load of money outside the US, if it ever comes back home prices for everything will be off the chart.
I was floored not too long ago when some "expert" clown on the stupid box was advocating getting rid of "large bills" as in the $100. Anyone who has set foot in a grocery store and done a little shopping knows $100 bill will be vaporised in short order.
Reason they wanted to do away with large bills is Illegal Drugs related , same reason the $1000.00 bill disappeared .
it's easy to hide $50k in $100 bills
try hiding same $50k in $20.00s
Plus who uses CASH anymore ? Drug dealers/buyers

Wrong.... We use cash on all moderate purchases.
Our government leaders "Bank interests" who own the politicians, want us to be a cashless society. It is much easier for them to control us.
It is much easier for all of us to swipe a card through a card reader than to pull out five or six hundred dollars from our wallets, like it is much easier jumping off a cliff than walking down the path to get to the bottom.
The people of our country better start to wake up.
Sorry for the rant, but this subject gets me riled.
I am much older than most of you, and see what our leaders are doing to us.
The younger generation better start waking up.
Case in point: Go to any protest "riot" and walk in any direction for a couple of blocks and you will see buses lined up waiting to take the paid rioters back to where they came from. Do any of you believe that all the signs they are carrying which say the same thing, happened spontaneously?
Ok, got to stop now to let my blood pressure drop down to normal.
Have a great day.
not to argue
I have had the same $20 bill in my wallet for about 2 months now , I never use cash , it's like that commercial where the old guy writes a check and the whole system comes to a stop waiting . Everything now a days is "instant access " you either have to keep up or be left behind . IMHO
FYI I am 50

I am 74, and I keep a minimum of $600 in my wallet at all times. A friend went to the bank a couple of weeks ago on a Friday and tried to get $1,500 out. The bank did not have $1,500 in hundreds??? That is worth worrying about.
Most all business's take cash. Not all business's will take all cards.
I also have a friend that when he opens his wallet, there is nothing but cards in it. Not good. My friend is 52.
If I was in a group of people jumping off a cliff, I would hope to step aside and not jump with them.
Just because others do things a certain way, it is not always the best to do as they do.
Carrying that much cash is asking for trouble . Just takes one dirt bag to see that wad of green and you are a target .
I keep cash at home in my safe for Dooms day . well electronic dooms day that is .
Agree a bazillion percent about paying for something with the counterfeit (Federal Reserve Notes) gubbint paper.......and NOT using the plastic. Bad enough the NSA, CIA, and all the other alphabet soup bureaucracies have their eyes, ears and noses in our private business, they don't need to know where or what I'm spending dollars on...And they do, if plastic is used.
As it is, the gubbint is all over us, with the drones, internet snooping, unlawful phone taps, "smart" digital TVs that spy on us and, worse, cell phones. I won't and don't have one of those, either. Have a landline phone with an answering machine.
Big brother is still watching your spending with Cash . Hold that $20 up to a light you see that dark string running vertical ? it's a tracker (magnetic strip)
I am an IT manager the best defense for being spied on is Knowledge . You need to learn how to cover your Digital footprints .

I am an ex cop, that was in the Vietnam war. At 74 I am not as good in a fight as I once was, but anyone who tries to rob me is in for a surprise. I have a lot of replacement parts in this old body, but my trigger finger works fine. Laser sights help with the worsening eyesight.
If we get hit with an enemy made EMP "electrical magnetic pulse" , cash might not help us, but if it is a natural CME "Coronal Mass Ejection", then when our electric grid is damaged, cash will be king.
It is smart of you keeping some cash in a safe place at your house.
Another place is in a safe deposit box.
My parents lived through the Great Depression, and told me what to prepare for if it happens again. If we don't learn from the past, our future is in peril.

Yeuppp, I'm a dinosaur and proud of it!
Unfortunately, the government is recording every phone call and electronic communication we make, including this one. There is a huge data center in Utah.
Try depositing over $10,000 in our bank account, and the government wants to know about it. Not everyone who has money is a drug dealer, but our government wants to make our country a cashless society. If you control the money you control the people.
I retired as a IT department head of a large company that had 31 servers and 5000 work stations. That was way back in 2001 and technology has grown leaps and bounds since 2001, so who knows what ability the government has now.
Wow I started in IT in 2000 , saw that Computers were taking over everything and the Job demand would be there . I wonder what the next 20 years will bring !

You've swallowed the bait hook line & sinker. All kinds of people use cash, good people, the fact that criminals use cash too, is not a good argument. If a good thing can be used in a bad way - that's the justification. Bad people do bad things, banning cash will not stop them. Ever.
Part of the push has been suggested is the "experts" want to employ negative interest rates, if they think it's warranted. They seem to be one and the same. Rates been near zero for almost a decade. The idea is to prevent the average person from having any defense in this situation.
A little tin-foily perhaps but, so many of that crazy stuff has turned out to be true in the last several years it's not even funny anymore.
My point was, that $100 is not a large bill anymore. Maybe that wasn't clear enough. It was a long time ago, but it isn't anymore. $500 and $1000 bills would be convenient. I believe $20 and $50 coins would be about right. Coinage is just a nuisance now. Small coins used to have a lot of purchasing oower.
