That's interesting. Technically, I did wait for the notification. Mine came at 4,000 miles but others are getting the notice approaching 7,000 miles. So clearly IF there is such a thing as break-in oil, it should have done it's job before the first oil change notice is given.
Some have claimed the factory fill has additives and not to change it early.
I think there is some truth to that. On my last 2016 JD tractor, the manual said "DO NOT CHANGE OIL UNTIL AT LEAST 100 HOURS" in bold black letters. JD dealer said they want the break-in oil to stay in to avoid oil usage later. Probably same situation on the Ford diesel. Al
Any substantiation of this? You'd think they'd put it in the manual. I put 250,000 on my 00' 7.3 with nary an issue after doing the 1000 mile change. Hmmm.
Same here...
My 2001 7.3 got changed every 10K with full synthetic. I purchased the truck with 14K miles so I cannot vouch for the first change. It has just under 250K now and still is only down a quart or so at the 10K change, mostly from oil seeping through the oil pan. New owner is going to fiberglass repair the rest of the pan (the deep well has a molded fiberglass bucket on it)until he gets it to S California and replaces the pan when the body is being redone.
I guess this is the difference in "Intelligent" oil minder. My 2011 was more of a mileage-based reminder than anything else. It never came up earlier than 7,500 miles on its own. I actually have no problem with changing at 4,000 if it's necessary and it's a good case study to see that it actually works as advertised. Oil change video tomorrow. I'm looking forward to isntalling the Fumoto valve knock-off on my bench.

I've had vehicles in the past that specifically said not to change early because the car had specific break in oil. I believe it said it directly in the manual.
There are no additives in the factory fill. It's straight Motorcraft dino 10W30.
This ^^^. Talked to a former Ford KTP employee... He said the only oil additive is dye, so that they can quickly identify any leaks upon first startup of a fresh engine.
Did my first change at 1000... No issues. I will switch to MC 5W-40 Synth at 5000 for towing.
