Truck did not start threw a motorcraft cam position sensor at it. It started. Next day in the am it would not start again. Came back later in the day it fired right up. Changed the fuel filter and inspected in the bowl, it looked ok.
Again it did not start the am, came back later in the day and it started. it looks like the glow plug relay is working according to the voltage indicator. I am throwing a set of motorcraft Glowplugs at it in the am.
BTW it runs perfect once started. Also once it is started and I drive it all day shut it down and it will fire back up every time. If it sits over night that's when the no start begins.
I will take a good look at the valve cover gaskets when I pull them tomorrow. Does anybody change them systematically when you change glow plugs? TIA.
I spent the afternoon installing new glowplugs. Again the truck did not start. I wore down the batteries pretty quick trying to start it so I put the charger on the battery and cleaned up my tools and took an hour break. When I tried to start it again it fired right up. Got me thinking bad battery.
To answer you question madpogue after I threw the cam position sensor at it I removed the alternator and the two batteries loaded them up and took them to advance to be tested. The alternator was shot, bearing was torn up. The only reason I took it with me was to have it exchanged under warranty. The batteries checked out good 85 percent with a load tester. I believe one of the batteries was toast. I just got back from Home Depot with a new Exide Battery. If it starts in the am I my be past this issue. Working on the Massy Ferguson 135 tomorrow.
That brought back memories. My Uncle had one of those and we used it to rake hay back in the '80s. I always hated it because the seat didn't have a cushion and for some reason it was tilted forward and always trying to dump you out .
Also funny that when I went to look for images on Google for that tractor, the first one that showed up had the seat leaning forward My Uncle's was not in this good of shape even back then.
I'm having a hard start problem where it takes a long cranking time to finally start. Usually 3 or 4 tries so as not to burn up the starter. This thread has given me a place to start. Thanks for the information.
I believe it's fixed. Like I said first thing I did was get the batteries load tested but after replacement of a battery it's been starting every morning. That's pretty bad when you cant' trust Advanvce for a battery load test. That's for the help!
Hard starting cold issues are usually either bad glow plugs, insufficient spinning RPM's due to weak starter or batteries, or a shot FICM. Most of our FICM customers become our customers following a battery or alternator issue.
