Smog pump question

Does a smog pump like the one that came on the 84 F150 302s spin free like an alternator does without a belt? Or is there supposed to be a good amount of drag? Thanks for any guidance.

It won't zing and coast like the alternator will, but it should not be hard to turn either. If you put the belt on it and it's real noisy, it needs attention.

Thanks for the info. I am curious because I want to use one as a pond aerator. I will run a fan belt off a windmill and put garden hoses on the outputs for the diffusers to oxygenate the pond. Weird little project but I think it will work.
