I hate it when I fix something, but don't know what I fixed or how I did it for sure. Earlier I complained about a sqeel or whistle coming from my 460, but could never quite trace where it was coming from. In preparation for a long haul to Bear Lake, I decided to change the belts. Before doing that I listened very carefully to the whistle and determined it was coming from the front of the engine. So I take off the alternator/smog pump belt start the engine and the whistle has disappeared. So I determined that the whistle is coming from the smog pump or related hoses. Replace all belts, start the engine, still no whistle. So my question is, can a belt make a whistle/squeeling noise?
I wish other problems would disappear that easy.
A worn belt can definitely make a squeal. It means it's slipping. It's a sure sign that it's time to tighten or replace it. I've been known to give a shot or two of wd40 to temporarily quiet a squeaky belt. That doesn't last for long though, and eventually I'll tire of that routine and replace the belt. Damp weather seems t make squeaky belts worse.
I have that same problem with my truck, and I came to find out that it was the smog pump. It was the bearings in the smog pump. I had to take the alternator pulley off and manually turn the smog pump to free up the bearings. If you can, just pull off the pulley on the smog pump and bypass it.
Good luck
it would give you just a little bit more power, because you have less things running on the belts. If you have to do your smog test, just keep your old belt and the pulley, take 15 minutes put it back on, do the test, and then take it off when your done. It's just like people do with their chevy pickups. They take out the cat and put in a pipe. When they have to do there emissions test, they just bolt the dang thing back in.
