I am at the beginning of a major (frame off) restoration to my 1973 F-205-1 Camper Special. It is all original with 89K miles. It is equipped with a 360-2 barrel, C4 tranny, DANA 60 open diff. The 360 has met all my demands in the past 10 yrs that I have driven the truck. My question at this point is in your opinion should I install a 390-C6 or stick with the 360-C4? I will upgrade the DANA to a Posi. As you know right now I get 12 MPG uphill or down
You might have an FMX tranny ? I would go with the 390 and C6. I have two Camper Specials, one '77 and one '78. They both have 460's with C6 trans. Dana 70's with limited slip. The wheel base is 140 inches instead of 133. The '78 will really haul. I'm using the '77 for parts for my Pulling Truck. Brian
My expirences with the 360 was that I wanted and needed the 390. Had one in my 68' F250 - C6 AT. Lots of HP to pull my 19' trailer but no mileage with it (usually under 10). Had two 390's in other trucks and cars. You need to go to the 390.
You are a funny guy. You would probably get better mileage with a 460. It all depends on how well it is built up. I would say that you could expect 8-10 MPG with mixed driving. Your best bet would be to get an OD unit from http://www.gearvendors.com they have a nice, small, bullet proof setup.
