Pulled the water pump from my 226 and want some input on what level of deterioration warrants a rebuild, and what is involved. Hit mine with the wire brush, scraped out the gunk with a flathead, and started soaking it in MMO. The bearing spins very freely but I assume there's maybe a gasket inside? Was planning on soaking it in Evaporust to get that squared away. Is the $100 rebuild necessary here?
If it were me, and I had it all apart, now is the perfect time to have it rebuilt. What a gigantic pain to get it out once you button it up if coolant starts seeping out of it. I had mine rebuilt while I had a radiator leak fixed, peace of mind in my book, eliminate trouble on the road if possible.
I agree with JB, these 226 water pumps are very hard to find so if you ever have a leak and need a quick repair or replacement you are out of luck.
Might as well get it rebuilt now and it will be one less thing to go wrong once you have it all back together.
I keep a spare one in my garage just in case.

Thanks guys, will get that done. Are all rebuild places pretty much the same? Was going to go to Little Dearborn Parts or maybe RockAuto.
I used Skip down in Florida, pump came back like new. Google skip and flathead water pump and his contact info will probably come up in fordbarn thread.
And I don't think I would ever rebuild one myself, it's one of the restoration steps I would pay someone to do, that does it all day for a living. You have to press parts off and on, and everything has to line up right to have a good seal and have the pulley in the right place for the belt.
A very timely discussion for me, I have the radiator out and had it recored and have been looking at the pump, wondering whether or not to have it rebuilt. so I will have it done
I sent my 226 pump and a unique 429 pump to Egge Machine in Stans Fe Springs, CA for rebuild. They did a nice job on both and turnaround time was about a week and a half.
