Alright everyone I'm back! Got the 1411 on she's purring now. 2 turns out on the drivers side, 3 turns out on the passenger side and she idles pin smooth. Manifold vacuum for spark gives her some pep on take off. Didn't seem to guzzle near the gas since our last run. On the highway Im barely on the gas at all to keep her up at 65-70.
I can say I wish there was more performance from this truck. Or at least this motor. I wish I at least had the ability to chirp a tire off the line. But that will come with a higher rear end, which will kill fuel economy hopes on the open highway.
Right now she holds a rock steady 20" of vacuum at 800rpms in park. Needle deflection virtually does not exist. Will be awhile before I can run a compression test and re-gap the plugs, but she's certainly running a lot better than she originally was.
As always, if anyone has some insightful "next step" advice for what they'd do for mileage or power, by all means let em fly! Considering headers in the semi distant future.
Thanks for the help so far. Slowly this thing is coming together...and leaking oil all the way.
Well, glad you're making progress! I put a 1411 on the 460 in my 77, and it's all I can do to keep from spinning the tires! It's only got 150 miles on this carb, but it seems to get better mileage than the ******* Holley that Ford put on it

I considered trying to track down a stock 4350 spread bore carb for my truck but figured it was a waste of time because the 4350 is junk and the stock holley from way back is junk also. If I ever come across a decent priced NOS one I'll eventually try an Auto lite 4100 on her and see how she does. But until then the Edelbrock 1411 seems to be doing just fine. Gonna fill up the tank today (payday!) and see what I get for mileage.
At some point this summer I hope to tackle the exhaust leaks at the manifolds and possibly attempt to grind out the EGR bump in the exhaust ports. Maybe toss on a set of headers as well to free things up a bit on the exhaust side. I plan on leaving the stock exhaust pipes and muffler on though even if I do go to headers. Seems to be 2.5" duals running to the muffler with what I'll guess is a 2.75" outlet.
Hey guys my 460 is pretty similar. It has stock manifold and stock exhaist but a edelbrock 1405 which i rebuilt and calibrated. Second hole on the accelerator pump but yes will do the same thing mainly when it's not warmed up yet - it won't peel out it will just bog. I figure its not getting enough fuel. Ill finish reading this thread
Currently there is no EGR system on this truck. PO must have removed it, as I don't see any sign that there ever was one!
This trucks idle has always been odd. Some days it's smooth. Other days it's shaking the steering wheel all around and shuddering while idling (mainly in drive). Idle is usually rhythmic, meaning it idles smooth for a bit then hiccups, then continues to idle smooth till it hiccups again. Certainly sounds localized to a single cylinder. When I had the intake off do do the intake gaskets, I saw the had have a bunch of heavy carbon build up on the valves. I recently had the valve covers off the do their gaskets as well, however I saw so no sluge or grime on the top side of the heads. Frankly, the valve covers looked new inside! My dad (40yr ASE mechanic) and I are under the impression the slight shimmy felt occasionally at idle is due to to coke up heads.
The part about having to have my foot stuffed way into it on the highway though is my reason for wanting to swap to the other carb as a simple fact check. I have to head out the same way I went wednesday, and figured I could toss it on to check what my mpgs and throttle response would be with both carbs. With the 1406, I burned about 5 gallons in 40 miles out on the highway. Equates out to 9mpg. Foot was halfway to the floor on that drive, and I'm assuming I ended up having the secondaries cracked open the whole time.
At this time I don't have a dial indicator to check the valve train with. When I had the valve covers off I cranked the motor by hand just to verify everybody was moving (and everything was) and check for anything out of the ordinary. I'm gonna be quote a bit sad if it turns out to be a dying cam, as I just had both the intake AND the entire front off the engine within the last month and a half. If I get the time this weekend (c'mon we don't want the girlfriend getting jealous of this thing attention wise), I will try to do a compression test just to see how she looks. Double and triple checking the running voltage at the coil is another quick easy test to perform as well.
Wish I could be getting paid to fix my own damn truck instead of all these heavy duty box trucks for Snap-On! Hell it's like working a second full time job to try and get my truck back to where it should be haha.
meh. Mine does the huccup idle too. I think thats just how 460s are
So out of curiosity I took my truck out this morning (1979 F350 with a 460 that has an edelbrock 1405 carb on it) and drove it a few miles to warm it up, then came to a full stop and punched the gas. Lit the rear tires up no problem and didn't bog out.
So I guess my 460 seems to be running well for now.
The stoxk 460 and 70 429 i had would never run "great" with either an edelbrock 1406 or 1411, no matter how much i tuned them i couldnt get rid of hesitation/bogs. Holley and quadrajets i had great luck with.
Edelbrock are garbage. Not weight their worth in scrap.
Been awhile but my truck runs perfectly. More than enough power. To the poster who resurrected the thread, you may wish to start your own if you're having issues with your truck.
