I was going to post this in the grenade thread but so as to hopefully help others out more readily searched here goes.
I drove the grenade Saturday to my dads house. All was well(40mi maybe) with the trans in this 96 e4od. Sunday my buddy wanted to test drive it as he will be purchasing it. When he put in reverse it repeatedly stalled the engine . I checked fluid level and was able to drive in d just fine. Any time I was in reverse or manual low one or two the engine would be stalled by what felt like the trans. Long story short I found the filter I installed a week earlier had a very poor quality seal. Normally these seals are metal inside and quite robust. This carquest brand was not great. The seal got torn and was allowing air intrusion and low fluid pressure. The stalling is typically low pressure and mine was full on the stick. I got lucky with this. Just as a future note for other servicing their trans watch out and be more careful installing thank was apparently.
When changing that seal the old seal can stick in there and not be noticed. Then the new filter and seal doesn't seat in there and will fall out. One of those stupid things that can happen when your not paying attention. Good 'trace' job Aaron!
