If I am not mistaken...the gauge cluster is an integral part of the computer network for these trucks... If that is the case...what you are talking about would be tough to do...
The only things in the dash tied to the PCM in our trucks are the PSOM and the tach. A truck as late as 2008 would no doubt be a completely different story. They must have the fabled GEM, and wiring it into a truck of our vintage would be a non-trivial challenge.
It's not pics you need; it's diagrams. Your challenges would be electrical/electronic first before physical fitment. Get your hands on the EVTMs of both years of vehicle and it might help you decide whether to even try this.

i am just really suprised no one has done this yet
I thought about but it doesn't literally fit. It's wider, deeper and the contour at the windshield is not even close to being the same. You would have to do a lot of fab work to the dash and graph everything from the obs dash to the new one.

It seems a custom dash would be easier. and yours is already painted black? Have you thought about starting with an obs dash and making a custom fiberglass dash out of it? integrating vents, double din radio, or whatever you like out of newer SD trucks? obviously the craftsmanship would have to be spot on, or it'd look like junk. or get it upholstered to match the seats.

I've considered leaving it along and just slicking it out and painting it. Especially after reading all of this. Might be too much and too expensive to tackle.

Not wanting to hijack this thread but does anyone have a suggestion about painting the dash and door panels? Is there a paint that will stay on the vinyl and not fade?
I have a 94 SD that I would like to improve

There are several plastic and vinyl paints and dyes out there. The only one I have personally used is one from SEM. It seemed to do ok, but you have to get the adhesion promoter for it to work.
