Here is what I know : drove my truck 300 miles, running strong. Next day I drove about 100 miles, and it started acting up. It was raining and snowing quite a bit, wet roads. Running rough, intermittent stuttering, acting like it was starved for fuel. It smooths out at part throttle, and then later will stutter again. Come to a stop and it lopes and feels out of balance. Oil is good, fuel filter changed when I resealed the fuel bowl about 10K ago. Fueled up at my usual Shell station before I left and still have half tank maybe.
I am not experienced with it, but Torque Pro pulled no codes. HPOP and IPR seem to be in specs, and no leaks. No fuel/oil/coolant contamination, and no fuel leaks I can find. No smoke at startup or when running, oil fill cap sits on tube without blowing off. Unplugged ICP and it ran worse, not better. Feels like maybe some air in the fuel since I get a crackle at startup now.
No exhaust leaks or torn CAC boots etc. What am I missing ? Any advice is appreciated. Weather won't let up out here, and without many tools I am limited as to what I can do. When I get to the ranch tonight I can pull it into the barn and have a look.
I don't think I have had the wipers off since I got here. I will check later today. It's the stock gray CPS. I have the purple one Clay sells in the glove box. Maybe it's time to out that thing in huh ? Does that little screw tend to break off easily ? I think that CPS is original, might be seized ... ?
I know that the Ford dealer replaced my CPS for free. There was an open recall at the time.
When was the last time you replaced your fuel pump (the electric one under the truck)? Could your pump be cavitating? I didn't think that there was anything wrong with mine but after it was replaced, my truck ran a lot smoother...
It's the original pump, so that could very well be the problem. It seems starved for fuel at the times it stutters. I didn't know if electric pumps slowly failed, or just quit all at once. My E99 is mostly original: HPOP , turbo, injectors, IDM, puel pump, etc. No tunes, just a dinosaur with 4" exhaust. IPR and ICP as well, but no problems up to now.
Do any of the usual parts stores stock the Bosch replacement pump ?
Probably couldn't hurt. For now I will have to blow out the line and listen. I guess this might temporarily unclog a filter, until I can get back home. I can get the Bosch fuel pump here locally for $99, so I might swap that out and see what happens. I'm not able to drop the tank here.
You say it is snowing. Is it cold enough to have fuel gelling?
It's not quite cold enough here, and it happens when it's all warmed up. The other trucks aren't having a gelling problem. It's a good thought tho, I considered that, as well as too much water being sucked into the air filter, but the symptoms persist, and it's 3 days later.
10k miles on the fuel filter isn't much, but it is a cheap and fast thing to replace it, just in case. I don't know if it is true or not, but I have been told that fuel filters will need to be replaced much more often when temps get below 32F if no fuel additives are used.
Thanks fellas, that gives me a few things to go do. Considering the age and symptoms, I will start with the CPS, and order a new fuel pump, and blow air back thru the supply line into the tank. I am almost due for an oil change, and I carry a fuel filter with me always, so I might as well change that too. In a few days I should know. With any luck ... !
