I lent my '96 4.0 to a co-worker for the past week. Tonight on his way home he suddenly lost power like it wasn't in gear. By the time I got to where he was at I was able to drive it around the parking lot. He drove it back to my place and it started acting up, Especially after coming to a stop. We managed to make it home but almost couldn't get it up the curb and into the drive way.
The truck has 240k on it and the tranny has about 120k on it. I recently replaced the radiator, cooling fan and clutch, idler pulley and belt tensioner.
Any suggestions on where to start? I haven't even had a chance to check the fluid level yet.
Thanks
john
Yes, begin by checking the tranny fluid level & condition as specified in the owner manual.
If the fluid is low, you have a leak some where, as the tranny is a closed system.
How many miles on this tranny fluid & filter? Ford recommends we change them @ 30K. mile intervals.
Is it the specified Mercon-V fluid?
Have you been having any problems with it lately?
Was the OD light flashing? If so you have trouble code clues stored in the computer/controllers.
Seeing as how it's a 96, it should be a OBD-2 diagnostic system, so your in luck there, as you can connect your ELM scan tool to the in cab DLC & running FORScan or the like diagnostic software on the viewing device of your choice, to have it scan all of the vehicle computer/controllers for an in depth look for trouble code clues, then post up All code Numbers.
Some starting diagnostic thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
