Well, after many trials and tribulations, I should be about to start working on my two ambulances again. Recall I overheated one in Dallas, and the other was driving great until I swapped a new oil cooler/EGR delete in, and now won't start. I'll start up those threads when I get started.

Today, two questions:

1. How are van 6.0s different than truck 6.0s? Is the lower horsepower programmed or is the engine configured differently. One answer on the Van side of this thread says the vans have a smaller turbo.

If I have to pull the engine to replace gaskets, etc., it might be easier to just swap in a used engine.

2. Does anyone know honest techs in Houston or Dallas? I hate taking a truck to a tech without knowing what's wrong with it, but I'm stumped on my second ambulance. Y'all have talked it through, Torreador came to the house, I took it to one dealer. Everyone thinks it should run but it doesn't. I can't afford to get hosed on both these trucks, and I figure the overheated one ain't gonna be cheap.

I forget now exactly why I didn't think that was the problem, but no, I didn't hook up a gauge to the upper bowl. The last thing I did was take off both fuel lines coming out of the bowl and removing the little screen/check valve on each one to be positive there was no restriction to the heads. The dealer tech checked the pressure coming out of the lower fuel pump, and the regulator has been completely disassembled/cleaned, even took the upstem out so there was nothing between the fuel pump and the heads but open line at good pressure. Also took the plugs off the back side of the head and get fuel flow. But I didn't check the exact pressure anywhere except coming out of the fuel pump.

In all of those different situations, before, after during, with, without, the engine has acted the same way - acts like it wants to start, displays good data, but doesn't start.

You can have every data point perfect, but a 6.0 PCM assumes you have fuel pressure just like you are. Just saying maybe it only has 10 lbs pressure, ya it has pressure, but not enough. For me and 6.0 vans, I have an aluminum upper filter cap for checking pressure. Just put a 90 fitting on top and hook my gauge to it.

Yeah, I remember that solution and will be looking to get one of those caps. I was dead broke at the time - still mostly am - but finally closed on some real estate and should have a little cash in the next week. I'd love to figure this one out.

Mostly wondering about my first question. There are some low mile 6.0 trucks available and wondering if I should bid on one or repair that engine in my van.

I think the upper oil pan is different on the vans for the oil filter mount. Not too bad because you pull the pan to pull the engine anyway in a van. If you can find a cheap truck with a 6.0, get it running good in the truck before you swap it. You don't wanna do anything twice on a van haha. Ive got one out of an 06 van now for an ""issue""

I gotta pay someone to swap the engines. I just don't have the lift to do that by myself in the driveway. I doubt it's cheaper to take out two and install one after swapping out parts than it is to just repair the one that came out, but trying to understand the costs. I might find a deal where the engine is almost free.

Do you know what it would cost to swap a 6.0 in a van ? Labor alone is going to be 2500 to 3 grand just to remove and replace. That's 25-30 hours. Plus parts, fluids and the stuff that breaks as they all do.

I ran out of money, what can I say? Should have some more in the next few days, and will resurrect that old thread when I'm ready to get started. At the moment, trying to figure out whether to buy a wrecked low-mileage 6.0 truck for the engine to fix my other ambulance that I overheated.

If it were me I would fix one and have it running 100% instead of having 2 that don't run.....but thats just my 02
