My engine locked up in my truck and I am looking for a used engine. I called a salvage yard and they ask if I had bolts in the valve cover on the drivers side. What is they difference. He said that in mid 1999 they changed it to a regular valve cover. If there is a difference, what would I need to do to the different engine to get it to work
The PI or performance improved heads were used on the 2000 (possibly mid year) 2V and on engines from factory. Bigger and better porting of the heads allowed the engines to do what they're supposed to and move air and rev.

my 2001 E350 would have those heads on it? any part number to identify them by? I'm either selling the powerplant or transplanting to my 86 shortvan , more info woudlbe awesome.

The only thing I can think of is that the PI head and the non-PI head difference was studs versus bolts on the valve covers??? Never heard of it or looked at one that close to know but that's all I can think of. If it was me I'd look for an 03-04 truck engine or possibly a much newer van engin.

2001, i'd be more than pretty confident to say that it has the PI heads. i'm drawing a blank on how to identify them at the moment, there's something stamped on them I believe but I can't remember what you're supposed to look for...
studs VS bolts on the valve covers is a good place to start, have a guy interested in the driveline, but this is my first V10 so its all new to me, sure haven't seen many bad comments about the engine. I need to strip soem interior parts and maybe headlites tommorrow, I'll pull the doghouse and check out the heads.
it would be cool in my shortvan, but I may be leanign to a simpler powerplant. pulling out a carbed 3006cyl. have a 7.3 idi w/hypermax turbo, a nice low mile 7.3 powerstroke, a old 11:1 460 , and this V10 to chose from. too many options.
sorry to the OP if this thread has been shifted away.
I had the doghouse off and looked around the surfaces of the heads for casting marks, guess I wasn't in the right spot. looks like somebody has already replaced the exhaust manifolds on this thing, they look new or damn near new. that was a surprise, this is a 16yrold Ontario truck body is full of rust holes!
I go back with a better light and look again Monday.
