So... after finding a set of injectors from a wrecked 96 F-250 on craigslist for $250 dollars up north, I decided to buy them. The guy said the truck was running (before it got smashed in the front) and had about 175k on it. They'll probably need new o-rings, and one of the oil splash guard things is chipped.
I figured it's a pretty snazzy deal and I could sell them for a bit more as cores if I don't decide to do anything with them and probably make money. I hope this is the case if I don't do anything with them. However....
My friend B-rad may be in need of injector work (potential worn out injectors) and he figured he was going to upgrade to stage-1 injectors like I have in my Bronco. Now that I have this spare set of injectors, we talked a little bit and I was thinking of this:
Sell my Stage-1 injectors with about 8k miles on a full rebuild discounted to B-rad then have the new cores I just picked up rebuilt to Stage 2 injectors for my Bronco.
If I send off the cores now, then they can be rebuilt and have them shipped back so we change out the injectors in our trucks at the same time without either of our trucks being down (I swap my injectors to his truck, and then put the Stage 2's into mine.)
Do you guys think I should go ahead and do this? I don't think I'll go bigger than Stage 2s because it costs too much more money for the injectors alone, then the needed upgrades add up as well. Jim's price of 1310 for 180cc with 100% nozzles seems like it can't be beat, and his work is great.
I don't have an intercooler yet either, and my turbo is stock (but seems to be in good shape). I do have e-fuel now though! I just need to fix the small leaks at some of the fittings.
So, go ahead and upgrade to Stage 2s, sell the injectors as cores, or just keep them for future use?
$20 each is about all I've ever been able to get out of cores. If they are good injectors with 175k miles on them, just sell those to your buddy for what you paid and his injectors for you a set of cores. Then, if you want Stage 2s later on, send those to Jim, and when you pull your Stage 1s, if your buddy want them, sell him those and get the other ones back on the deal.
Another thing you need to think of is your running gear. Stage 2's are really going to stress that 5 lug axle then you will need more air to clean up the exhaust. So you better get a bigger line of credit and buy everything.
Bubba unless you plan on a t4 turbo upgrade like next week just stick with what you have. All 2s will do is really heat egt up faster and slay your stock turbo in quick order. Invest in a good ,studs, springs, pushrods will also go along with those stixs .
Five lug axle, didn't think of that! I think you should be happy with the I's. I pull 17K with my I's and they are a lot better then the II's I had before that and I had the T4 setup.
My next two plans before thinking about stage 2s was getting an intercooler, than potentially getting a d66 turbo. I don't believe I'm going to get a t4 turbo because the mount system with the turbo will be like 3 to 5+ grand from the little I looked into. I'd need to address my axles before I spend that kinda coin! Plus, I'd spend that money on buying another powerstroke truck in the first place! (Or you know, my powerstroke camaro swap )
Now I'll change the subject from injectors since I'll probably not be upgrading them before axles/turbo/intercooler:
Do you guys think the d66 turbo is a worthy upgrade for me with stage 1s?
The initial reading I did seemed most people liked it, but then I saw a bunch of people say they didn't like it, that boost was lower and they didn't have any performance increase. I'm assuming that's with stock injectors but I just want to know what you more experienced guys think!
Otherwise, should I just buy an intercooler system instead of a turbo first? Or should I try and have my hpop upgraded (it is a new hpop but it's a cardone or something from Rock Auto, still new though.)
As for meetings, I'm not familiar with the 'OBSMA' acronym but I assume they are meetings about how awesome everyone's upgrades on their trucks has been and what their next plans are right?
Oh okay that's really good for me to hear then! It seemed there was overall more good with the d66 from what I read, but I did recall reading some negative reviews that stood out on me. I would be bummed it I spent 1400 bucks for little improvement. I do have quite a bit of black smoke on my highest tune and as well as a semi decent amount on my dd tune if I floor it, but I don't floor it too much. I also can't fully utilize my highest tune because my EGTs get hotter than I'd like. I've never went past 1250, but I know I would be able to fairly easily on that tune in 4th and 5th gear.
I'm glad I asked here with your experience as well because I was pretty set on getting that turbo pretty soon (when funds allowed.)
I suppose an intercooler is then my next best mod. (I don't have a choice, I HAVE to keep upgrading) I was probably just going to go with the CXracing setup since it's pretty close to a bolt in. I don't think I'll have luck finding an e99 spider and then trying to get pipes and everything made.
Dang you have everything I need! Idaho is it? I've never been there, I bet it's a little colder there than in AZ right now.
I have been wanting to plan a road trip for quite some time though. Making a trip to Oregon then Idaho would be pretty awesome, but it won't be in my budget for quite some time!
Maybe I can get a paid engineering internship before I go on active duty since I may be around a little longer than I was thinking. I didn't look for jobs since I thought I was going to be gone already but I may have a while still. I'm sure they would pay more than the current job I work at! My current job is pretty cool though and the boss is awesome, but the pay is pretty low for a mechanical engineering degree.
Staying here longer just gives me more time to get as many upgrades done!
