Paint and Body Work Question...

I'd like y'all's opinion on paint and body work and reassembly.

I had originally gotten it in my mind that I would do all my body repair and then paint each piece individually prior to setting the cab back on the frame and then build everything out.

A second option I've considered as I've worked thru my upper and lower fenders and front end is if I shouldn't paint the undersides of everything , then reassemble the parts work the body smooth, then paint the exterior surfaces. I ask this because the fenders are flimsy and never in their final shape until they are bolted together.

Or a third option would be to build the body on the frame, work everything smooth, then take it all back apart, paint it, then reassemble it.

I'm leaning towards the third option but I was wondering how y'all would do it or how you did it time was not an issue to you. I'm looking for your lessons learned. I think I'll be at that decision point in a few months.

Thanks

Keith

Hi Keith,

I'd highly recommend option number three. Maybe number one, if all the parts are the old ones and the body works were minor things. In my opinion, option number two is not an option at all.

Yup, #3. If you can't do that, you can also make some fixtures to hold the panels in their correct shape. I do this alot, you can easily work around all sides.

Do all the body work first before painting anything, if you can.

About painting......are you using a metallic color, or a solid? It can make a difference on how you paint it.

3rd option is working for me. I've got the time and can be real careful during final assembly. Bonus is the the fiddly little alignment problems are worked out.

IMHO if you haven't changed any structural components on the frame or body that would effect the way parts fit then #1 will work. Otherwise #3 is best. I don't like #2 because you can never get paint into all the cracks and seams.

Solid Color, Number three for sure. Metallic, game changer if your new to painting and doing it yourself.
