99 f250 gas. 4 hi worked this morning, this afternoon, it doesn't. the hubs no longer work under vac, but I have them manually locked in, and I checked, still are. when you "key on" the 4x4 light lights, and goes out like it should. when "key on" I can hear the relays clicking. I assume that means the switch is good. checked the maxi fuse under hood, its good, and I changed it for good measure. so...........whats my next step? I tried search, but as usual, I get a bunch of garbage that has nothing to do with what im looking for.
TIA
so...........still no 4x4. checked the fuse, tested the actuator motor, it works, and replaced the GEM, to the tune of $220, and still doesn't work. and of course, neither does my fob now. is there a way to test the actual switch? am I missing something??
Sounds like the truck has ESOF and you have manually turned in the hubs to LOCK.
The question becomes, and it sounds like the answer is No - do the hubs engage with the vacuum when you switch from 2H to 4H? If not, then it is probably time to tear down the hubs and replace the big yellow seal on the wheel hub, it seals for vacuum and is probably dried out.
I assume you can hear and feel the transfer case moving from 2H to 4H - just no power reaching the front wheels.
the vacuum part has never work since I got the truck. I just manually lock them, and leave em locked in the winter when I need 4x, and just use the switch to engage the transfer case.
at this point, the transfer case is NOT shifting into gear. just rechecked the shift motor and it is functional, tried a new switch, nothing. no light on dash. there has to be a relay or fuse I don't know about. where are the relays for the transfer case? all ive found is the maxi fuse, 30 amp under hood fuse box

The big relays are in the under hood fuse box - you touched them when you moved the the maxi fuse.
shift motor only functions when I put jumper wire on it, but it does move that way.
problem is not internal....its a fuse a wire a relay, something stupid that i cant find. there is no power to the back of the dash switch, running or just "on", at any of the 4 wires. at this point, there is no clicking of relays at all. I swapped the relays around just to see what happened. battery cables are clean (per the thread from diesel link above)
ok.........so the end result is in. thought id write up the answer for anyone else that may find this post in a search when they have the same problem.
even though the transfer case shift motor would move when you applied power with a jumper wire, the contacts inside were not making good connection. the mechanic said age, rust, dirt and viola.....no shift. he said it was like a child, LOL, and when it couldn't figure out what to do, it wouldn't do anything. cleaned contacts and works good again. anyone wanna buy a GEM module LOL
