Hey guys i have a 78 f250. Im rebuilding the engine and according to a kit i bought from a local power shop i should be in the area or 400 plus horse and 430 trq in my 400ci backed by a C6 tranny. Is the stock converter fine or should i upgrade. If so any recommendations i know almost nothing about converters.
if i can keep the original i would prefer because down the road i want to swap for a manual but dont have the founds or the time right now. This is just a street car and my toy/project.
here is a list of what i am doing
weiand intake
ported stock heads
tmi pistons (9.4:1 CR)
750cfm quickflow carb
high energy 268 comp cam
2.5in collector flowtech headers (not sure about rest of exhaust but will be 2.5in piping)
i believe that wraps up all the performance goodies.
One thing i just remembered. I plan on towing my car home with the later this year about 14hrs split between two days. But it will very very very rarely be used for towing anything if at all besides this one trip
C6 is fine if healthy. Ford put those behind the 500 lb/ft 460s in the lincolns, worked well. Your 400 should run good, but a well built 460 will out run you all the time, so I would say your converter would be very unlikely to fail.
Agree the transmission and converter should be fine if in good shape... and kept cool. If you don't already have one, a good size auxiliary transmission cooler in series with the radiator tank cooler would be a really good idea.
