I thought I had this issue licked at last. After a year of repairs getting my truck (Bob) changed over from an Idaho (inspection free state) rough neck to a New Hampshire civilized truck, he has failed inspection. Now mind you he passed two months ago but here it is a birthday thing so the first full price inspection was only good until my birthday. It took three tries and lots of money I didn't have to pass last "year" I put on new shocks, brakes, rear hub seals, battery cables, and exhaust. Now he failed because....the new exhaust put on by a inspection mechanic is too loud!!!! Oh and the window tint and hole in fender, all of which was there before. Okay window tint...scrape it off, hole speed tape or rivet some sheet metal to get by, but the exhaust come on what is with that. Yep, gotta start talking with the shop to replace the mufflers, like that is gonna happen with out costing me. Funniest part is the inspection technician was out testing my truck when he got pulled over by a State Trooper and raked over the coals for the exhaust. Dimmed my hopes of sweet talking them into letting it slide. Anyway thought you all could enjoy a laugh while I have a ggod cry and figure this one out. I will say the dual exhaust with FM 50s is loud, after 12 hours pulling horses I was near deaf myself.
Sucks to be you.... :P just kidding
Hope you get it fixed tho and cheap
I love Arkansas... NO inspection.
Which is good in some ways, and bad in others
But yup I got Fual FM 40s and My 390 is WAY to loud.
Of course it was louder w/ the glasspacks... that I 'keyed off" and blew up :P
...I feel yer pain Biscuit,
I went from NW rural WA to Phoenix metro AZ...My first year down here I spent $1800 getting all the emissions sorted out...Fortunately, down here they're not so concern about what the rig looks like as long as it runs clean...
As part of my monthly budget I set aside a sum of money just to cover possible Emissions violations...
This year I ace'd it, passed first time through...actually the guy said I might be running a little TO lean...nothing a change in metering rods wont fix though...
I know what you mean wabiker...it took me a long time and aggravation to get my '70 to pass the emissions tests here in Phoenix...Biscuit...sounds like a lot of little petty things they hit you with (hole in fender?)...the exhaust thing I understand, but some of the other things? Good luck in getting it all sorted out.
I am just getting mine ready for the Virginia inspection. As a former Assistant inspector I know what needs to be done. I will have to do the exhaust gaskets and extend it out of the bed. All for wheels will need cylinder rebuilds.
It's gonna cost me. I am running Thrush Bullet style mufflers but I think they will be ok.
I havn't had an auto that was 'too loud' since my old '70 LeMans. The cop said "Don't you think your exhaust is too loud" and I said "No sir, I can still hear the radio."
I knew he was going to ticket me anyway.
Meanwhile......Every biker wannabe gets to throttle their Hardly Ablesons through the neighborhood every Sunday morning without a second thought.
Arkansas did inspections until the late '90s. Years ago, there was this older gentleman in Texarkana who did Arkansas vehicle inspections in his shop that was kind of funny about them.
If you let him replace a tail light, it didn't matter what else was wrong with the truck, you'd pass. I passed once with nearly bald tires amongst other problems on a 66 F-100. The tail light was good and I started to argue with him but caught the wink in his eye plus he was overlooking everything else, so I let him carry on.
So they actually look under the hood and at your exhaust systems there? Here all they do is check your bright/dim switch, your taillights, horn, tires, and seat belts.
i could never drive knowing i would have to co through what your states put u through. in mn we dont realize how good we really got it, i have to thank jesse ventura for one thing. i was thinking of moving to vegas but i couldnt tolerate the sniffers and the way they drive out there, they r all crazy, i can hold my own but why should i have to off the track?...lol
Yeah I just moved to Maine. I stopped in NH and was informed that my poor old 79 would not pass state inspections. No rust over the size of a quarter and no through and through rust at all. I wonder what Maine's inspections are like. I moved from MT and they don't have any kind of inspection.
So much for the land of the free. Noise police? I can understand safety issues sort of, but noise. Wow glad I live where I do. All we have is an emission inspection and I'm not in the counties that require it, so I don't have to deal with that either.
