5" is not necessary and is a nightmare to fit. 4" kit is more practical. A turbo back kit is best and if you are able to get the kit to eliminate the catalytic converter. Muffler is optional. I tow a fifth wheel with family so I run a muffler.
You do not need a tune for exhaust. If you do not have head studs you may want to hold off on the tune or at least run a mild tune. Talk to a custom tuner, give them the details of your truck and they can recommend a tune for you. I used Gearhead tunes and run the 8k tow tune.
I have been running 4" MBRP turbo back cat delete and muffler delete but I don't have emissions to follow.
Running this for well over a year now. I love it but I also want stacks and it's a kit made by MBRP to switch from what I have keeping the downpipe and excess so makes easier swap. I just havnt got around to yet or money to spend on it.
87crewdually is right. 5" is a nightmare. I have run a MBRP 4" T back cat delete with muffler for 12 years. I have X4 tune and Ed's Atlas 80 FICM tune, studs, etc.. The 4" exhaust without the cat is all you need. If you are not going to tune, just running the stock exhaust without the cat makes a BIG difference. Significantly reduces turbo lag. Cat delete pipes are available. Mine is an MBRP that I had before I got the whole T back exhaust.
I run 4" with a 12 inches of inline silencer insert from GBB.CA - I bolt in the insert as far forward as possible and it eliminates any kind of drone in the exhaust as well as dropping decibels. So far I've done 6.8L V10, 7.3L and 6.0L and 6.4L trucks. Net result is great deep exhaust note without being loud, excellent flow and no increase on exhaust gas temps.
Speaking from personal experience, a 4" turboback with a 3.5" downpipe is what you want. I went with a setup that had a 4" downpipe and ended up with MORE lag than the stock exhaust. I am not the only one who has noticed this. There's a couple guys around here that did the same as me and reduced the lag noticeably when they swapped their 4" downpipe to a 3.5".
the mbrp 4" exhaust kit comes with a 3.5" downpipe. I went with a diamondeye? (Diamond something) kit that had the 4" downpipe and regretted it.
That's how my Diamond Eye aluminized kit came. 3.5 down pipe and I eliminated the cat by making my own flange and pipe. I also don't use the conventional U-bolt clamps where I can. I use stainless band clamps from Napa. The band clamps don't deform the pipe and if you have to take it apart for any reason it takes little effort.
OR a good tune will cure your 4" downpipe turbo lag immensely.
What some say is that the larger downpipe will cause the turbo seal to leak due to lack of back pressure.

Good point.
I never had my tunes adjusted to the larger exhaust. I just learned to live with it. I enjoyed the low EGT when towing my 11,000lb 5th wheel enough to not bother with it. If i still had my 6.0, i would look into this option.
Would it make sense to use a down pipe with the same inner diameter as the exhaust port of the turbo at least to the catalytic converter/muffler or first junction, which ever comes first?

Glad to see I'm not the only one who learned and expensive lesson....
Tunes do not fix the lag a 4 inch downpipe causes. I've run the hottest of tunes, hottest FICM calibrations and nothing fixed the lag except the 3.5 inch downpipe.
I run a 3.5 inch downpipe on my 2005 and it takes off like a raped ape when I get on the pedal. With the 4 inch downpipe, the Atlas 80, SRL Extreme or TSD SPD, I would lag, lag, lag, belch out a bunch of black smoke THEN take off. I almost got into a serious wreck because my truck spun into oncoming traffic in the rain.
With the 3.5 inch downpipe, I have zero lag and my truck takes off at the touch of the pedal running a STOCK FICM calibration and SRL+.
When you talk about the 3.5 downpipe how long is the pipe. Halfway down the the firewall - down the firewall back to horizontal. I still have my stock system and cat on my shelf just in case I need it but am experiencing some lag and may reinstall the downpipe and adapt back to the 4" without the cat.
