POWER STEERING FILTERS?

Has anyone used or does anyone currently use one on their bump? I searched our site but only came up with later models using them.

Efficacy?

Are they installed inline on the return line?

I don't have one on my truck but you can get a magnetic PS fluid filter from Autozoo (or probably most any auto parts store). It would plumb inline in the return line.

I never thought of running a filter on my power steering. But they are available. Not very expensive and some look like they are magnetic. Kind of cool. Looks like they go on the return side before the pump.

Early 60's fe cars had a round built in Pump filters. The top was removable it looked like a mini air filter about 1.5" tall an 5" rpound the fit into the pump tank sump. The filler cap had a dip stick on it.
Many people remove them an left them out for some reason.

A PS filter is a good thing to use if you have had a pump or gearbox failure. The plastic ones can stress and fail over time, so generally it is recommended that you install a filter along with the replacement component, then remove it after a few weeks.

I was just thinking that a filter should be a good thing. No?

You are correct. Unfiltered oil is going to run dirtier than oil that is filtered. Having a PS fluid filter would not be a bad thing to do. A PS cooler would be a good idea as well, for longer component and oil life, IF you don't have one.

The return line would come out of the PS gearbox, run in series through the filter, through the cooler and then back into the PS reservoir.

I have a cooler. I believe it's stock.

Yes that's a stock PS cooler. You need to put it on the low pressure side (return hose) like Ultraranger said. I don't currently have one hooked up, and the pump gets rather warm. I plan to install a larger tranny cooler next and use the old tranny cooler for the PS. Additional filters are going on both systems too.

How about using an external tranny fluid cooler? Ford lists one. I 1st noticed it under Super Dutys but it carries a Lincoln LS part number. It's listed as 1/2" for some unknown reason though.

I pulled this PS cooler off of a 360 that was in a '69 F100. But, it didn't look like this when I got it.
