I have a buddy that has an opportunity to upgrade from a 96 f250 7.3 auto ext cab long bed to an 03 6.0 auto 4dr 4x4 long bed.
All I know right now is that the motor had been replaced at some point. Chassis has about 140k.
Truck has been sitting for a month, or so and has dead batteries.
Here's the checklist I have come up with off the top of my head:
--New batteries
--Bench test alternator
--Check degas tank for oil in coolant
--Check color of coolant to ensure no "green" crap
--Watch tailpipe upon cold start
--Pull front wheels to check rotors and brakes condition
--Use 4 wheel drive to test operation
--Check oil filter cap for OEM
-- Test 7 way trailer light plug for tailights, and turn signal operation
--Test ALL lighting operation.
--Check the chassis for any leaks
I will take my Scangauge 2 to check:
-- FICM voltage (cold)
--Warm up Delta spread EOT vs ECT while doing highway test
-- Transmission temp
--Boost numbers with WOT
...................
What else is I am missing?
Can someone please reference the thread with the normal operating numbers? This way I can take that with me to the truck this week or next.
Check for previous puking, scan for codes.... take the Torque Pro instead of scan gauge or take Forscan and run the embedded tests, like a buzz test, glow plug test and whatever else my be suspect.
87Crewdually has a good display of the correct readings of a good running truck.
New brake lines, the drivers front is always the first to delaminate leading to a dragging caliper.
New ball joints between the front axle and the spindle holding the wheel hub
New FICM power relay
New thermostat
New hot side turbo boots
Probably new battery cables due to corrosion
Probably new starter
Probably new alternator
New F/R shocks

I would use the Torque Pro, but I don't have the bluetooth adapter. So, I will be bringing my ScanGauge 2.

You need to get the adapter Preston, scan gauge is a horrible code reader... at least program it for "DTC" counts so it can give the number of codes that are stored... if it's more than 0, then you'd know there are codes that need reading.

I know its a bad code reader..........
Got a link for a bluetooth adapter? Something not expensive?
Ebay, ELM327 Mini adapter.... pick one or even get one at ..... WALMART. I use a blue one, don't load the disk that comes with it, they are full of spyware!
Worst case if you cannot find an adaptor is to just swing by an auto parts place and borrow theirs to read the codes while out on your test drive. Pep Boys will read it for free too I believe.

Yeah, my buddy and I will take this truck by a shop, we know a guy who has the equipment to read everything.

Randy, thanks for the tip on the disk. I will be looking into getting this setup later. I want to get a 7" or 10" tablet, with Bluetooth capabilities. We have our funds tied up in others places right now.
Used two of these with no issues connecting to ForScan for Windows.
For what it's worth, I had 1 DTC stored that was a fan speed intermittent (P0528, IIRC). SGII showed the DTC but wouldn't read it. Went to parts house and they couldn't read it either. ForScan read it.
I think Walmart is selling them of around $7, someone told me they bought one a couple days ago from there. Surprised to hear that, but it's Walmart, nothing surprises me much from there.
