i have a 91 bronco with a 5.0 push button 4x4. since i have had this truck the four wheel drive does not seem to want to engage i have been told by a few people that it could be the actuator on the transmission that engages the 4x4 may have gone bad. i dont know much about four wheel drive so any help would be much appreciated
Same thing on my 91. As long as you have manual hubs, (if you don't, replace them NOW - either Warn Premiums or Mile Marker's) just crawl under the truck and find the cylinder looking thing attached to the t-case. Have someone in the cab hit the button a few times while you're banging on that cylinder with a crowbar, hammer, whatever... if 4x4 engages, you know it's probably bad. ($200-$300 to replace, or you can rebuild if you're technically savvy enough)
The stop that keeps the actuator from rotating past the 2WD position is also known to rot out. If it detects that the motor is not presently in a valid position, then it will not rotate the motor to another selection. Read through this page for some good repair info: http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html
Being the hypocrite that I am, I still have not taken my motor apart to fix the same problem.
i have tried banging on it while someone pushes the button ...... no response i also took the motor off and tried to turn it manually also no luck ........ is it possible to transfer to locking hubs??
Do you hear clicking in the cab when you press the 4x4 button? Yes, I have locking hubs with my 96, as well as the pushbutton. If you have 3 bolt hubs, you just have to buy the conversion kit, as well as whichever pair of hubs you want (I have Warn Premium, I hear the Milemarkers are good too). Instead of true shift on the fly now, I just have to lock my hubs before I engage. The way I see it, if I feel I am going to need 4x4 at some point during my journey, I will just lock them before I leave. If you have the money, you can also just scrap the auto transfer case and bolt a stick case in its place.
Many times I have the same problem. As long as you hear the clicking the accuator is trying to kick it in. I can usually get it to kick in after trying 2 or 3 times in park and it will kick in LOW only in Neutral after a couple of tries.
How can one rectify this so it works on the 1st attempt I am not sure. Good Luck.
From what I have heard, the relay in your dash is getting its signal, and you said that tapping the actuator on the transfer didnt help. This sounds like the perfect opportunity to switch over to manual hubs. Even if this isnt the problem in the long run, you will save yourself many headaches when winter comes around this year, and you havent gotten the family stuck in the snow (not that I would know.....). I would start there, then reasess the situation after that. My bronco was doing the same thing as yours, and the hubs had crapped out. Its about 120 for the new hubs and the conversion kit if you have the 3 bolt. It can be done in your driveway in an hour or so if you are mechanically inclined.
I've got the same problem but only for 4 Low. How would going to manuals help completely if it's a problem with it getting into that second speed within the transfer case? I'm all for going the less complex route for sure...but I sure could have used 4 Low a couple of times.
the easiest way to fix that is to get rid of the crappy auto locking hubs and install manuals. the auto's tend to work like a ratceht.(one way but not the other). As for the t-case. not sure mine's manual.
