aod driveshaft issue

i did a 302 aod swap in my f100. The rear axle is a dana 60. i grabbed a crown vic driveshaft from the junkyard the length is great and slides onto the transmission. but the yoke that connects to the diff is different u joints are bigger as well. so i grabbed the flange from the crown vic the but the diff had a bigger shaft any solutions?

You can get ujoints that are sized different in the cross as well as cap size if it isn't to big a difference.

Yup, they're conversion joints.
Find out what the industry number is for the D60 you're using and for the Crown Vic (I.E. 1330 and 1310) and get the appropriate conversion joint.

How do I find out the conversion numbers? I have the u joint for the aod but not the Dana 60. Would it be easier to replace the yoke? I'll try and post a picture of what I'm talking about. The one on the left (or on top depending how you view the picture) is how the aod drive shaft attached to the crown Vic. And the one on the right is how the f100 connects to the Dana 60

Sorry for the questions still learning the odds and ends.

Your local parts store should be able to match them up for you.

I questioned it too. I pulled off the ID tag that was bolted to the diff. ANd it started with 60. so I was told it was a Dana 60. And according to the other numbers on it. It is a 3.54 ratio

I suggest not going off the tag and instead referring to the stampings on the axle tube. Then look up the BOM on Dana's website.

Does the rear have five or eight lugs?
F100s didn't come from Ford with a D60, that was F250 territory. An F100 (and F150s) usually came with Ford 9" and had 5 lugs. There is one possibility though, starting in '77 Ford did put a Dana 44 in some of the F100s.
The 9" Ford has a center section that can be removed. The Dana 44 (and the D60 too) has a sheetmetal cover that is removable.
If it has a removable cover, look for a BOM # (bill of material) stamped on the axle tube.

I just went down to the garage and I couldn't find any stamps on the tubes I scraped them to see if there was anything. Same bolt pattern as a Dana 60. Where should I be looking?

IT also has a complete cover not just a section to pull out and has 5 lugs. I had a Dana 44 in my cj5 but it didn't look like this. I may have to wait till tomorrow and get some mineral spirits to clean up the axle tunes enough to find the bom stamp

The only D60 rears that I know of with five lugs and semi-floating axles were found under hemicudas and 440 six pack Mopars.
The D60s under our trucks were eight lug and full floating axles (later trucks, 1980-up, could have semi-floating eight lug D60s).

I know it's a long shot. But Ford did put Dana 60 rear end in the f100 trucks in the 60's. My friend had a 66 with a semi floating Dana 60. I asked my buddy that is a Ford master tech to look at it he confirmed it was a Dana 60. He said they are not very common. So just a thought maybe someone transplanted it with a little work?

While it is good to know, the model of the rear axle is irrelevant to the original issue. You have a driveshaft with a certain size weld yoke and the yoke from the diff already removed. You can just take the DS and the yoke to your local parts store, or better yet a DS shop, and find a u-joint that fits. The important measurements are the width across the u-joint from the end of one cap to the other and the diameter of the caps. Once you determine those the parts guy should be able to look at the dimensions in his u-joint book and figure out what you need. This would be much easier at an old school mom 'n pop shop than an O'Reilly/AutoZone type chain store. My guess is that the DS yoke is a 1310 (3.219 width, 1.062 diameter) and the diff yoke is a 1330 (3.622 width, 1.062 diameter).
