This is my first post so don't rag on me too bad. I just bought a 2001 F-150 SuperCab and the passenger side door lock will turn from the outside but doesn't unlock the door. Anyone have any ideas/suggestion about how to cure this problem? I know how to take the door panels off but I'm unfamiliar with the lock mechanism process. Also the door locks are manual as well as the windows.
Will it lock, but wont unlock the door? If so the lock cylinder is fubar. If it wont lock or unlock the control rod may be off or the actuator cam on the lock cylinder. You will just have to take a look and see what is up in there. The lock cylinder is easy to remove, it is clipped into place with a horse shoe shapped clip. Just push it toward the latch side of the door and pull it out. The actuator cam is clipped on the lock cylinder with an E clip and can be detached from the rod by sliding it off. Once you reinstall the lock cylinder you can just snap the rod back into the actuator cam.
It will lock/unlock from the inside but from the outside it just turns from right to left when I turn the key. I got the door off and took a look at the good door and the bad door (passenger side). The problematic part (broken) looks like a u shaped (laying on it's side) piece, the top part is broken. The rod that goes to the actual lock (next to the window that pops up and down and the other end is supposed to be connected at the mouth of the "U" shaped piece. This "U" piece lies directly behind the door lock where you stick the key in. The top part of the "U" is broken off. Is this part considered the actuator or the door lock? When you say pull the clip and pull it towards the back of the door and then pull it out, is it removed by pulling out through the inside of the truck or the outside of the truck?
will I be able to replace this "U" shaped piece or will the whole lock have to be replaced. Do you know aprox how much it will cost for the replacement?
Yes that is the actuator cam. It can be purchased at the dealer for probably less than 10 dollars. Yes you remove the lock from the inside of the door.
So is the U shaped part the part that I actually push on then pull? So do I push the whole lock cylinder toward the back of the vehicle and pull towards me? Will it then come loose or do I have to remove a clip first before removing it? I assume the part that is broken is the part where the rod is connected to the lock is the Acutator Cylinder. So when I go in to the Ford Parts Dealer do I just ask for a new Acutator Cylinder or just show them the part? Thank you for all your help!!!
Just show them the part, they will know what it is. They see them all the time. You remove the lock cylinder by pushing the retainer clip on the side of the housing it is in, toward the rear of the vehicle, and pull out the cylinder from the housing toward you.
I would also take the whole lock and cam up to the parts department. That way you wont forget the orientation of the cam to the lock. It will fit on there two ways, one for right hand and one for left hand.
Sometimes they get broken by slim jimming. It could happen at the dealer, by a repo man, lock smith, or anyone who accessed the vehicle that way. Could have been a tech who worked on it previously. Could have just been a weak part.
Nope, no one trying to break into the vehicle. Sadly normal wear and tear. Good news though... The part only cost $2.50 it just isn't in stock until later next week. Thanks all for the wonderful help!!!
