1972 crewcab

hello guys I have a 1972 ford crew cab I bought with no tranny or motor, all I know it's a 4x4 that has a divorced transfer case, I need to know the best route to get it complete, new crate motor or find a donor truck, I have done a ford motor swap before and was a nightmare ( who knew two types of 460s not the engine sales guy that's for sure) I want a 400 or 429 or 460 with a good solid tranny but don't have 20 g, what would you guys do?

I would find something truck already 4x4 running condition. Body not required to be good. From that you have the best chance of getting most of what you need. Good luck and welcome to FTE

YES, THERE WAS!!!! I own a 70 and a 76 F-250. They were hand-built in Ontario, Canada. There are a lot of them around. 1965 was when Ford started building their own crews. Now for Kolt: Proper prior planning prevents ****-poor performance. What engine did its have originally: 240/300 or 360? Are the engine mounts still in it? Is the clutch linkage still there? What engine do you really want and what trans do you want? It will cost a lot of money because you will need a lot of nit-noid parts which are not made nowadays for a 45 year-old truck. A 429/460 is $$$$. A 400 is a boat anchor straight from 77-79.

Nice truck. The only thing is that ford didn't make a 4x4 crew for the public. So I think that the chassis may be a 1973 to 1976 one. Is the front axle open or closed knuckle?

1972 crewcab

those trucks may not have been made for the public. but what about the railroad or a power company and the govt. this many years later it could have found its way into the public market. a friend of mine had a 1963 dodge a-100 truck that when he went reg. it with the Ca. DMV. they said there was no record of it. he bought it at a govt. auction. this was in 1974. so he became the og. owner. i know where there is a crew cab bump that has some kind of wrecker setup on it and weeds that are almost to the door handles so i am thinking it has not moved in a very long time . i need to check it out closer to find out what the story is on it .

So the general public couldn't order crewcabs? What is this ad about for recreational purposes?

A F-250 4x4 crew cost only $773.60 over the cost of a regular cab F-250 4x4 which was $3366.74 so a total of $4,140.34 in 1969 base price.

An interesting item on the ad I posted is that 4x4 crews had to have the mandatory #3500 HD axle.

I think what lilorbie is implying, that back then, GENERALLY, the crewcabs weren't primarily built for public use. Crewcabs are very common these days for the general public but, that wasn't so much so back then.

Crews back then we're mostly made for highway department, government, railroad or construction company use.

Actually Steve, the ad states that Ford wanted to open the market to the general public for crewcabs to be used as recreational vehicles in 1969, not just for business and government use.

Not to concerned about history of truck just want ideas of motor and tranny combos I have a 460 in a 77 ford 2wd would that be a good motor to have rebuild and stuck in? Or do I need to find one out of a 4x4? Also is there a 6 speed tranny that could be easily bolted on?
