Hey guys..new to this site but not fords. I have a 1982 f100 im working on and im building a 393 stroker to go in it. The only problem is that the largest header primary tubes ive found are 1 5/8". Im gonna need at least 1 3/4" primaries for this engine. Does anyone know of a manufacturer who builds a header with that primary tube diameter or know of any headers from other vehicles that will work? Thanks.
There is a chance mustang shorty headers will fit, though a custom y-pipe will have to be made. You may need to keep the small header pipes to restrict the power a little bit to keep from blowing up the trans. You must be ordering one of those highly modified high dollar AOD'S?
Ive built a few aod's in my time and they hold up pretty well with the right parts installed in them. If i cant get it to hold up ive got a built c4 i can throw in there but i like to get out and drive it to the track. Im not a fan of trailer queens lol
Like I said, I found a few threads where truck guys have gotten 5.0 mustang headers to fit. But if you find the large tube headers who knows.
I have heard the hollow shaft they use for direct drive and also send oil pressure through the middle of it to lock the converter up is the weak link. Is that true?
The direct drive input is the one that breaks. Its the small shaft that goes inside the main shaft. The fix is a one piece shaft but u lose the lock up capabilities and fuel mileage suffers
I have had extremely good luck with flowtech headers as far as performance goes, I cannot attest to their durability because I usually dont keep a vehicle long but I do know I was impressed enough with them on the 351ho in my 85 f250 I bought another set when I replaced the 351 with a 460.
