Question ECM ?

I am getting a 390fe big block motor plan on tweaking it some. What years did they start using a ECM? I want to modify the 390 backed by a c6 tranny and want to know the years the f100 and f150 didn't have the ECM.

That's one of those questions that can't be answered as it varies by engine and the GVWR of the vehicle. By 82 the 351W in an 49-state F150 had a computer and a feedback computer-controlled carb. But in 84 the 351HO was offered that didn't have a computer. However, a 2bbl 351W in a 1984 F150 did have a computer, although a 2bbl 351W in an F250 with a GVWR over 8500 lbs didn't have a computer.

On the other hand, since the 390 wasn't offered in these trucks it never came with a computer.

Why would it matter if it had a computer? You are ripping everything out related to the engine anyway correct? You would only get into trouble starting in the mid 90's trucks with the electronic speedometers. Even if the truck had a computer control and controlled the transmission, it would not matter to you, you cannot use the trans anyway, it won't bolt up.

I believe it was around 93 when they went to electronic speedometer.

If you use a fuel injected truck, you will have to convert the fuel system over to a low pressure system for the carb. The fuel injected trucks run about 40psi, way too much for a carb.

If you have inspections in your area, it will never pass.

'92 was the first year for the electronic speedometers with the PSOM cluster.

The PSOM isn't dependent on a computer to operate, it actually gets the signal first, processes it and sends a signal to the PCM, gear ratio correction is done by the PSOM. The 92-94 IDI 5 speed trucks don't have a PCM.

Is the speed sensor in the rearend? And if he kept that, the speedo/cruise/abs would still work without the engine computer?

Yes, the sensor is on the diff, and as long as the PSOM circuit is powered it will function as normal and feed speed information to the ABS and cruise, that is how the IDI trucks are set up.
Outside of the OBS PSD trucks; cruise is still independent of the PCM and the RABS is on its own computer as well(with all engines,) not that I've ever had it function properly enough to make it a desirable feature.
