The front end on most newer vehicles has adjustable camber and caster as well. A good alignment shop will also check the vehicle's tracking, check the steering axis inclination which tells if any parts are bent etc etc.
I check those as well....while camber on my jeep is not adjustable...the caster is. My caster is set at 6*....however the caster on a jeep is not that important due to the longer front driveshaft.
regarding your squeaky steering. I believe that it is your pitman arm. just get a grease gun with a needle attachment and puncture the boot on the pitman arm and fill that bad boy with some much needed grease. seal it up with some silicone. a very easy process.
I have the same loud annoying squeak! Whether you turn your steering to the right, left and or push up and down on the bumper, it squeaks! (squeaks bad everytime I hit a bump) I have greased and oiled everything underneath the front end and it still squeaks. The noise is coming from the front right side, just behind the wheel. Please help! Also, when I switch to 4x4, my frontend will not engage. The lights come on, the transfer case engages, and the vacuum motor on the front diff. is operating at full range and still no front engagement. What and or how do I check the hubs?
The squeek you're describing sounds like a dry balljoint. Usually you can find it by feeling all the balljoints and tie rod ends while someone bounces up and down on the bumper. The one that's making the noise will "vibrate" as it makes the noise.
Your truck has no hubs to lock or unlock, just the "Center Axle Disconnect" that is operated by the vacuum motor. With the front end jacked up and the truck in 4x4 both the axles should turn when you turn the driveshaft if the center axle disconnect is working. You might have a broken shift fork inside. The vacuum motor might be moving the shift lever but the fork in the center axle disconnect might not be doing anything.
I've had the same squealing noise on my '97 4x4 for a couple of years now. The last couple of months, it seems to be getting louder. I've been told by a couple of armchair mechanics that its probably the pitman arm. Does anyone know how much it costs to replace?
