What would be the most common thing in a 77 f250 that would drain a battery in 3 days to below cranking power. The radio turns off, and I don't suspect the lights. What would in your honest opinion be the culprit. I just don't want to chase down wires for no reason. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
1st thing I would check is the battery itself. I had an old 65(corvair) I bought and put a brand new Battery in it. About every 2-3 days dead. I checked everything on that car and found nothing. Had the battery tested......and it was bad! Oh well O'reillys swapped it with no problems. Anyway just saying, start where its easiest. Make sure the battery is good and go from there.
Are you sure the brake lights are not sticking on? If you do not want to chase a possible bad wire, get a quick disconnect flip lever style battery connector and rock on.
Or after you have been driving the truck, with it at idle, ck the battery volt. Shut off truck, ck volts, wait 5 min ck volts. Any draw down?
Disconnect + and - on battery, let it set, ck voltage daily X3 days. If the battery goes down you have a bad battery.
When you 1st touch the + side battery connector to the battery itself if you get a faint spark you have a possible wiring issue.
Sorry Viger81 but this problem can't be cured over the internet. You are going to have to do some troubleshooting to find the problem. Could be one of the problems listed above or possibly a bad diode in the alternator or one of a hundred other things. Start by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery and installing a test light between the cable and the battery. If the light illuminates there is a current draw. Remove one fuse at a time until the light goes out. That will be the circuit the drain is coming from. Trace the drain from there. Good luck in finding it.
I like this guys videos a lot, learn something new even on stuff I already know how to do. He has a video on fundamental electrical short troubleshooting.
I will be trying all these ideas later this week as I will have the day off. Thank you for ALL the ideas and suggestions. If you have any more please post them. Thanks.
