wondering about putting E4OD in my 79 f150

Hey guys, New to the forum and new to ford trucks. I picked up a 79 freewheelin Ford f150 from a friend. I have a 351M that I'm rebuilding right now and would like to put an overdrive transmission in it, I've read a little bit on it. I'm wondering if I the donor truck I found would have the majority of the parts to complete the build. I found a 92 f250 with a 460 (big block bell housing) it's 4x4 so I don't have to wonder if my old transfer case would bolt up as it already has one. I also know I'll need a controller for that trans. I'm wondering what needs to be done to make the shifter lever work, does the floor pan/trans hump need to be modified, does a crossmember need to be made or will a certain year work, do I need to clock the transfer case different and how is this done, will the torque converter bolt up to a 351m flex plate? Thanks for any help

I can't answer any of your questions.....but I can add another one......will the driveshafts have to be modified?

I'm pretty sure they do, I wasn't too worried about that as there is a place now to far from me that can make new driveshafts. I thought I read somewhere that rear would have to be shorter and front longer. Can someone confirm this? Thanks again

Just connect it. It will work without modification.

I don't know the answers to any of your other questions.

Yes, that's true. The E4OD is longer than a C6.

US shift makes standalone controllers. Shift linkage can be made to work with some sort of adapter. If u have a 4wd you should already have the tall transmission hump to clear.

I'm working on the project for my 77 2wd over the next few years. I've also acquired a 460 trans. You also need to figure out a speed sensor and how to run the speedo. My trans is older so has the gear driven VSS/ speedo cable combo

Does someone make a kit for the speed sensor/cable? I saw That US shift makes a controller, that looks like a pretty nice set up.

I had a 92 F150 with an E4OD, and I can say they aren't cheap to rebuild. They have some expensive parts in them that are aren't cheap. It's a been a while, but I recall something about some year models having design weaknesses. Just make sure it's in tip top shape before you bolt it on.

The speedometer cable runs off the transfer case output, so your speedometer will work exactly the same as before.

Don't mind me, just want to see how this unfolds so I know if it'll work for me later

Will a '92 transfer case still have a speedo gear in it? I was thinking that was the year they switched to electronic with a differential pickup..... Can they be converted?

I can't answer that for sure. When I read the original post I thought he was planning on using the original NP205 behind the E4OD, but I may have misunderstood.

Was thinking I would use the transfer case from the 92, I just assumed the 79 wouldn't fit the E4OD.

I haven't personally done it, but as far as I know, the 205 will bolt to the E4OD if you grind a small spot in the adapter flange to clear the t-case shift rail. A very minor modification and personally the route I'd go if it was mine.

I believe clearance between the front driveshaft and the transmission is also a problem.
