Morning Fellas! I'm going to put some gauges on my '97 350. Boost and EGT. I already have tranny temp.
Question. How much difference does gauge quality make? I was checking out the glow shifts and they look sweet, but, amazon has other gauges for a fraction of the price. Has anybody used these other cheap ones? Also what ranges do I need for boost 0-30 or 0-60, and what will my peak EGT be?
I once bought a real cheap one on ebay and it didn't work at all. I then decided to buy a glow shift for one manifold and a isspro for the other manifold. The isspro will read 100° higher then the glow shift but they work very well, so far. Get a boost gauge over 30 lbs because future mods will get you over 30 lbs. Peak temps should not be over 1225°.
In my opinion, get the best gauge you can afford. I would recommend Isspro or Stewart Warner. I have the Glowshift gauges in my 97, and the pyro works off and on. I got the higher boost gauge range, and I think it is hard to read, as the number lines are closer together. If you are going to leave the truck close to stock, you probably won't see 30 lbs. of boost anyway. I put Autometers in the 96 C&C truck, and the pyro quit in about 6 months. The Isspeos and Stewart Warner gauges are still running fine.
I have Glowshifts in both of my OBS trucks with good performance. I don't have a problem with them. Some have, but I have not. I think they were worse in the older days but now they have come around and are pretty decent gauges for the money.
My 08 and 05 model auto meters work a-ok and never have given me a seconds hassle. Where I come from its auto meter or nothing. I can't comment on any of these off brand gauges because I have never owned any of them. They may be OK .... But I will never know...
All three have been in service for about a year and work perfectly. You can also calbrate them to get pretty accurate measurements. Some guys prefer needles, I don't mind digital numbers.
