Ranger temp sender location

I have a '97 Ranger 4X4 Supercab STX with 4.0 & 5spd. Recently, the temperature gauge has stopped working. I suspect it is the temperature sending unit. I guess i could go out and buy the CHilton's or Haynes... but then again, that's why you are all here

Can anyone tell me where I might find this little devil underhood?

Thanks & hello to all from a newbie to this board!

TC

On my 95 4.0 it is close to the thermostat outlet on passenger side of engine, in intake manifold. Looks like a brass bolt with a single wire plugged into top of it. Mine sticks out at an angle.

I bought one at Oreillys for about 3 bucks- Borg Warner brand. Works fine.
I did have a hard time getting a socket to fit it. As I recall none of my deep wall metric fit. I think I had one 11/16 deep wall that worked, but another 11/16 deep wall was too small. I am not at home to check and confirm my memory.

You will see 2 similar sensors, one is the coolant temp sensor for the PCM, it will have a 2 wire connector on it, the second one is the temp gauge sensor, and it will have a single wire connector on it. Are you sure the engine is getting up to operating temp???

Thanks for the replies... I do see 2 sensors... the single wire one on the pssenger side is at least accesible! The other looks like it would require the complete removal of the intake! Regarding operating temperature... I drove it about 40 miles yesterday with temps in the low 40's here in Portland, OR. I thought that should have been warm enough to stir the coolant around a little!
