After reviewing the pictures and the quoted darkeness values, I am beginning to think that alot of the "matching" process is a gamble. There are probably differences in factory tinting (which isn't a film but tinted glass) and aftermarket tinting films that make every application different.
Getting a good close match will be hard. I see statements that 35% matches, 22% matches. There was a picture of 35% tint that definitely was lighter than the rear factory windows. So the factory windows must have a brown shade that is between 35 and 20.
My 20% certainly doesn't match and now I'm not sure whether to have them remove it because it doesn't match. I really don't want it any darker.
This picture is a good example of how the new front tint is a different color than the factory.
Look at the driveway across the street through the rear side window, and the front side window and you can see the rear windows has a brown tint to it, vs the front window more gray.

Thanks for the replies, y'all. I live in North Carolina where the tint laws seem to be a little more permissive. I guess that I will have to get off my rear and actually make a few phone calls...
My 98 F150 just failed NJ inspection because I had the tint still on the fronts from the guy I bought it from in Tampa, Florida. NJ says "No tint on the front windows." None. Period. That sucks. I liked it because it was the same as the rears, in color and level... oh well.
well the screw now has tinted front windows. it is a close match, not 100% but i believe thats impossible due to the factory tint being baked into the glass as oposed to just a film. i am happy with the result. the front look a little diff cause like said they dont have the brown color to them like the rear. if anything this causes the fronts to just look a touch lighter, which could be good to avoid being hassled by the po pos. anyway yah have to look close to see the diff.
