Quite a few times now I've gone to order parts and the site will specify, "From Serial G90,001" or something similar. What doesn't make sense to me however, is that the end of my trucks serial number is "C8558". That's completely missing a digit according to the parts site. This has occurred on RockAuto as well as AutoZone and I'm never quite sure what to think.
Look at your VIN, the serial number is the last six digits.
73-77 that means your serial number is one letter and five numbers (Axx,xxx), 78-79 its two letters and four numbers (AAx,xxx)
Okay, so then my serial number is "EC8558". And I guess that puts me "after" the number G90001 since that sequence style wasn't used after 77. Sound right?
Yes, double letters = 78 and up (Not 100% true but in the range we are talking about it is true)
The '77 model year had two serial number sequences, O00,001-O99,999 andX80,001-Z25,000. The 78 model year ranged from AE0,001-CK9,999,
the 79 model year was DC0,001-FK9,000.
And yes, the highboy break was Y20,001. Before is highboy, from is lowboy.
I stopped using LMC truck parts because they made it soooo confusing to order, by using truck serial/VIN. My (titled as 78) truck is a complete mashup of parts from 73 thru 79, so it was nearly impossible to order the correct parts that way unless it was something common standard, like door seals, etc.
Would always get someone's grandmother babysitting on the phone who knew nothing about these trucks, and the answer would always be the same: "well, if ya don't don't know the serial number, I caint help ya."
So, started ordering from JFB and DC, have gotten the correct part every time.

I've made it a practice to write down (enter a memo in my phone) the VIN of donor rigs if the part or system involves a serial number split. Then I enter it the truck's notebook.... record keeping is a beyotch! For example, my Autozone vehicle list has a 78 351M/C6 although the brake parts I ordered were intended for my 70 with the donor's disc brake swap.
Yeah this is for a pinion seal, there's so many axle and year options I'm just hoping for the best from rockauto. I think I got it right. I've seen it when trying to order other parts but don't remember what.
