Hello all...I'm having a very sporadic starting issue that I need some help with.
In the last 50 starts it has happened twice:
When I try to start the truck, all dash lights and power come on but there is no sound or cranking from the engine. If I cycle the key back and forth a half a dozen times it will then crank and start. Next time I will try and listen to hear if the solenoid is clicking.
I've read posts about it being the anti-theft, ignition switch, stater relay, ppm relay, etc....
I could replace the relays to rule them out, but my gut is telling me that's not it? Would there be a code from something like this?
My GF's Focus did this exact same thing 2 weeks ago. The only way to to get it start was turning the key over and over. No clicking at all from starter relay. I replaced the starter, no problems since then. It might be the relay, and not start itself, but figured I would have to pull starter to get the relay off, might as well replace the whole deal since it's the original '00 starter.
Solenoid, ignition switch, neutral safety switch (on transmission) are the 'big three'. Like ford said, shift to Neutral and try it. You might have to be an octopus or get help, but hold the key on Start and slowly shift the trans from Park to Neutral back and forth to see if you get a hit.
I recently cleaned the connections (3 wires) at the starter/solenoid and the battery terminals. All is good so far, did I get lucky?! I'll repost in a few weeks to see how it goes.
