ok, I have an 89 aerostar, 3.0, automatic (A4LD). The troubles began with it not wanting to start after it had warmed up to operating temp. After cooling down, it would start. It progressively got worse, to the point that it will not start at all now. I can jump across the start relay (on the firewall) and it will always start. I have replaced the start relay (on the firewall), the ignition switch, the key cylinder, and the the neutral safety switch.
I am at a loss!!!!! HELP!!!!!
Shaun, It sounds like the starter itself. When you leave it off for a while, your battery comes up full again. Check your connections on the starter, they have to be tight, then failing that try this, the next time it doesnt start, crawl underneath and give your starter a good whak with a hammer. If it starts then you know the starter has a dead spot. If you need to replace it, Its a very simple job. Good luck - afcro
well...I don't know, it will not crank over with the key, but I can bypass the start relay and the starter will engage right away. so the starter is working properly. But not with the key switch.
This is the case, even first thing in the morning. the key switch will not crank the engine, but if I jump across the relay it will crank, which seems to me, that all the connections to the starter are good. There seems to be a missing link in the wiring for the starting circut.
Did you check for voltage at the relay terminals which close the relay (not the terminals that provide power to the starter)? Make sure the ground for the relay is good as well. If you're not getting power to close the relay, then look upstream, including the ignition switch.
